On June 27, George Hansen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on a sunny afternoon at the St. Boniface Hospital.
George is survived by his wife Edith, daughters Carla (Cole Castelane), Shelley (Stan), and Deanna (Rick), and his grandsons, Brett and Quinn Castelane.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, John and Clara Hansen.
George was born in Winnipeg. In his young life, he trained in New York City to pursue a career in opera. He returned home and started working with his father in the business J. Hansen and Son. He met Edith in 1954 and dated for 4 years, marrying in 1958. They started a family in 1961.
His father passed away in 1961 and George took over the business until he retired at the age of 70 in 2001.
He was involved in the Shriners’ organization in the pipe band for many years and volunteered at the Shriners’ hospital. He was very generous to many charities throughout his life.
George was a passionate man and loved golf, curling, fishing, stamp collecting and playing cards with his friends and family.
After retiring, George and Edith spent winters in Victoria and then White Rock, B.C., but decided to come back in 2007 to Winnipeg as his family was the most important thing in his life.
George and Edith were married for nearly 56 years. George was very proud of his daughters and grandsons.
A celebration of George’s life will take place on Wednesday, July 9th, 2014 at 2:00 pm, at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
George, you will always be remembered and loved by your whole family.
