Georgia Evelyn Angom

Georgia Evelyn Angom was born on June 6, 1956 in Gulu Uganda. She lived a graceful life and passed away peacefully on the evening of February 8, 2021 at the age of 64 years. She is predeceased by her father, the late Mr. Alfred Ocen, who passed away in 2010. She is survived by her daughter, Violet Alal; son, Paul Acaye; granddaughter, Violet's daughter Samrawit (Sami) Auma Fitur, all of Winnipeg Manitoba; mother, Mrs Florence Ocen, of Gulu Uganda; brothers, sisters, and a large extended family.

Georgia is remembered as a loving and caring person who excelled academically and professionally and maintained a down to earth and humble persona.

Georgia attended Mary Immaculate Primary School in Gulu. She then went on to Wanyange Girls School and Trinity College Nabbingo for her Ordinary Level secondary school certificate. She completed her Advanced Level secondary education at Kitgum High School. After her high school education, she worked for some time at Uganda Commercial Bank in Pakwach branch.

Georgia then went on to Makerere University where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and history in 1982. Upon graduation, she joined the Ministry of Culture and Community Development as a community development officer. As part of her work, she went to Zambia to attend a diploma course in social work. She also worked in and visited several countries including Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, and Ghana.

In 1992, Georgia relocated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She continued social work and also went back to school. She earned a second Bachelor of Arts degree in International Development in 1996 from the University of Winnipeg and in 1998, she earned a Master of Public Administration degree, also from the University of Winnipeg. In addition to her work in Winnipeg, Georgia also worked in Toronto, Madison, Wisconsin and St. Paul, Minnesota, in the United States, as a social worker.

Despite her academic and professional accomplishments and extensive travel, Georgia was very friendly, kind, and generous. She was personable and had a wide network of friends from all nationalities and demographic groups. She was active in the community and always ready to lend a hand. She loved to read and enjoyed discussing a wide variety of topics in politics, society, and culture.

Even as her health challenges mounted, she maintained a positive outlook on life and was fully engaged in all family affairs, always ready to offer her advice and support when needed. Georgia leaves behind a legacy of resilience, accomplishment, and a pioneering spirit. She will be remembered for her warmth, friendliness and generosity. Our hearts are broken, but we have faith that Georgia can now rest in peace.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Nine Circles Community Health Centre, especially Dr. Gregan, Poseidon Long Term Care Home, Misericordia Place Personal Care Home, and Lodge 6 West at Deer Lodge Centre for their kind care and compassion.

A private family funeral service will be held on February 16, 2021. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a celebration of Georgia's life will be held at a future date.
