

Predeceased by her sisters Capitola and Kathleen, she will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Margaret-Lynne Astwood (Jim),her son Douglas (Linda), grandsons James and Robert (Alice), granddaughter Marilyn Howden (John), great-grandchildren Elisabeth Rose, Laura, Claire, Eric, Samantha, Keara, Kathleen and Michael and many nieces and nephews.
Although born in Quebec, Gladys lived most of her life in Winnipeg where she met and married her first husband, Gordon Bateman. She was employed for many years at the Winnipeg YWCA and enjoyed travelling throughout the world with her friends. Gladys was heavily involved in church work at Fort Garry United and was the founder of their Native Concerns Committee. She was instrumental in the publishing of a directory of services and agencies devoted to assisting native people. This directory has since been expanded upon and is still in use today. She was a very caring person and would never turn down an opportunity to help those in need. She was an avid supporter of the performing arts and enjoyed attending the symphony, theatre and ballet.
A special thanks to the staff at Beacon Hill Lodge and especially the nursing staff on the 9th floor.
In accordance with Gladys’ wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life took place at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013.
