Helen was born into the Loewen family, from the Halbstadt area, on October 2, 1925 and lived on a farm in her younger years until she married Henry in 1948. They lived and worked on a farm until the late fifties, when they moved to Winnipeg. They settled in East Kildonan where they lived for many years on Besant Street. Following Henry’s death, Mom moved to an apartment on Henderson Highway, where she lived independently for several years. She then moved to Concordia Village for 2 years and then finally to Concordia Place, where she lived for the last 5 years.
Helen worked for the Winnipeg School Division as a teacher’s aide. She spent many years working with students with learning disabilities. Helen often told stories of how the children she worked with had improved their learning skills and behaviour.
Helen loved to cook for her family and over the years she hosted many dinners for special occasions such as Christmas and enjoyed any excuse to have family and friends over for a meal. Helen and Henry loved to camp, and as with most campers, they started with a tent and graduated to a motor home. They took their young family on many camping trips, and when they retired they spent several winters as snowbirds in Arizona. They looked forward to their winter holidays and usually came back with souvenirs and mementos for the family. Helen and Henry were both active members of Grey Street United Church for many years.
Helen is survived by her sons: Garry (Carol), Raymond (Gail), Dennis (Lorna), Darryll (Kelly), Sam (Pam), Susan (Donny), and 8 grandchildren: Karin (Paul), Brenda (Brian), Krista (Ian), Lisa, Erik, Dayna, Garrett and Madison, and 4 great-grandchildren: Adam, Ethan, Scarlett, and Lucy. Helen is also survived by many members of her extended family.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Henry (1999), sister Tina and brothers Henry, Jake, John, and Peter, as well as Susan’s and Donny’s son Chris.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Concordia Place, who took a special interest in Helen’s care. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Concordia Foundation or Cancercare Manitoba.
The funeral will be held at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Highway on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. and the interment will follow at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.
