Mr. Ian Nicholas MacKenzie

Born in Forres, Scotland on July 17, 1925, Ian passed from this life in the early hours of May 1, 2011 at the age of 85.

Ian was predeceased by his toddler daughter Joyce, older brother Bill of Winnipeg and sister Betty of California. He leaves behind, to cherish his memory, son Jim (Joan), daughter Carol (Dan) and daughter Donna; grandchildren Scott, Marla and Tara, and his seven great grandchildren.

Dad’s family settled in Canada when he was an infant and spent his entire life in Winnipeg. He served overseas in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, was employed for a brief time with Standard Brands and the City of Winnipeg Fire Department, before a 35 years career with the CNR.

In his youth Dad was an equestrian horse rider, kayaker, high diver, swimmer and hockey player. Dad signed his NHL rights with the New York Rangers, however, a knee injury cut short an NHL start. He loved camping and duck hunting, as much for the scenery as for anything else. We remember his strong wit, doing math in his head, memory for details, fun at St. Ambroise beach, and being content with the simple things of life. He generously helped many in the community with a meal, financial help, or a listening ear.

In his later years, he developed a close relationship with God and prayed often for his children and their families. Thanks dad for your love and encouragement. We will miss you calling us to say “how are you doing?” and “so, everything is okay then.”

We would like to thank Ed (Grampa) and Erna and all his friends at Autumn House for their friendship that they gave to our Dad.

A celebration of Dad’s life will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 10:00 am. Immediately following the service will be a brief reception, with interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery.
