It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Jane Hazel Vandal on March 18, 2026, surrounded by love and in the presence of her devoted husband of over 39 years, Joseph (Joe) Vandal.
Jane was predeceased by her beloved twin sister, her parents, aunts, uncles, and several dear members of her extended family, including Lawrence and Elenor Milbrandt, Patricia Sisco, Elise Huff, Bill Fritz, and Betty Bake.
She is survived by many who cherished her deeply. Though blessed with eight first cousins, she remained especially close to David Dargie (Jane) and their families in Ontario, and Pam Wingfield (Dean) and their families in Colorado. Jane was grateful for the strong and lasting bond she shared with Pam and Jane.
Jane was also lovingly connected to extended family including Ron and Lynn Melbrandt (Lynn, deceased), Diana Doerksen (Jac, deceased), and Brenda Betesta (Rod), as well as their families. Her "adopted" family included Penny Brunet and her children, and Jane's beloved grandchildren: Haylee Versace (Gian Franco), Makenzee Sokal (Matthew), and Lance Burnet. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Penny-Lynn, Olivia, and Gracie Sokal.
Jane shared special friendships with many who brought light and love into her life, including Nancy and Edwin Hermano and their sons Dewin, Dwayne, and Dwight; Lili Popp; Burkhardt and Marg; Karen and Kevin; Wayne and Marleny; Ruth Enns; Kathy Yost; Eleanor Zimmerman and Barbara Brown and Mark Oneill.
She held deep appreciation for Luciana and Gloria Armenti for the many cherished Sunday dinners in Winnipeg; Sandra and Ralph for countless Christmases and summer trips to Gimli and Winnipeg Beach; and Helen Osborne for her steadfast love and uplifting family stories.
A special thank you goes to Barbara Stuber, who shared Jane's outlook on life and illness, and to Al Bearely for his respect and kindness and his excellent food. Jane also treasured her Saturday morning visits and hugs from Jennifer Gelinas, her long-time friend Monique Danher for over forty years of grace and polish, and Shivam and his staff for their concern and delicious coffee. Huy for her weekly arm rubs. Merry-Jane Anderson for her love and concern. Penny Brunet for her love and support over the last few weeks.
Jane lived with strength and style. She had a keen appreciation for life's finer things: beautiful jewelry, fine dining, and sushi, along with a strong sweet tooth. A heartfelt thank-you goes to Chris and the team at Lilac Bakery for providing many of Jane's favorite treats, and of course, no birthday was complete without a cake from Jeanne's Bakery.
A lifelong Lutheran, Jane found her spiritual home at Grace Lutheran Church in 2009. She deeply appreciated the fellowship and friendship of the congregation, including Leslie Frischbutter, Les Langer, Terrol Rogers, Trudy Gray, Lorna Schledewitz, Carl Veldkamp, Gary Petsnick, and Doreen Thorlacius, among many others.
Jane also had a long-standing affiliation with the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (S.M.D.), now known as Manitoba Possible. She first received support from their services and later proudly served as their switchboard receptionist for over 20 years.
Jane would like to extend special thanks to her family physician, Dr. C.J. Van Rensburg, and his dedicated staff at Dakota Medical Centre for their outstanding care throughout the years. She was also grateful to Dr. Jeffrey Graham and team at CancerCare St. Boniface for their compassionate care during her final months along with the Palliative Care team.
Her heartfelt appreciation also goes to the staff at 55 Nassau—especially Rosie, Michelle, the maintenance and security teams, Alibashi, Biniam, and Hermela—for their kindness and support.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Grace Lutheran Church,
211 Kimberly Avenue Winnipeg, MB on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at 11:00 am. Numbers 6:24—26
