It is with a profound sense of loss that we sadly announce Kim’s death after a hard fought battle with cancer. She leaves to mourn her passing: her partner Knight Morton and children (McKinley, Sarah, Hayley and Keiran), and grandchildren (Alfred, Sophie, Oliver, and Samuel), son, Daniel Kuchma (Samantha Swanlund), mother Marian Thomas (McCoo), brothers Paul, Chic, and Peter (Kelly and Wyatt) Thomas, aunt Iris Lieber (McCoo) and uncle Rick McCoo (Linda).
Kim was predeceased by her father “Chic” (William) Thomas; grandparents Seth and Irene McCoo, grandparents William and May Thomas, uncles Teddy McCoo, Jack Lieber (Iris), Lloyd (Jean), Jack (Sidney), Dennis Wyndels and aunt June Thomas (Wyndels).
From the time Kim was a young child, she embodied kindness, strength of character and a spirit of adventure. As she grew up, these qualities lead her to enjoy a life filled with great passions, successes and loving relationships. Kim freely shared of herself with all of those who touched her life, and she touched many.
After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Social Work, she later went on to obtain her Master’s Degree. Kim spent over 30 years assisting children, families and communities and was often heard to say how fortunate she felt to have been able to have had a career engaged in such meaningful work.
Kim considered one of her most important jobs as being a mother to her beloved son, Daniel. Her love for him was central to her life. Kim also enjoyed her role as a stepmother, foster parent and aunt over the years. With her partner Knight, Kim’s love was strong and spirited. Her nephew, Wyatt, had a special bond with Aunty Kim, a relationship she treasured. Kim felt so fortunate to have a close and loving family. She highly valued her relationships with her mother and three younger brothers as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and others.
Outside of her profession, Kim was known as the quintessential hostess. She loved nothing better than to bring friends and family together into the warmth of her home. She would treat her guests to sumptuous delicacies in an atmosphere of fun and laughter. Kim and Knight also loved to travel and this passion would take them to many destinations throughout the world.
Kim was an exceptional friend to so many who were lucky to have been close to her. Her personality, wit and laugh were effervescent…it was infectious. Her abundant and generous spirit will live on in all who knew her and loved her.
A cremation has taken place.
A memorial service and reception to remember and celebrate Kim’s life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
A special thanks goes out to Kim’s close circle of friends and family. She was so grateful for their phenomenal support; they were always by her side every step of her challenging journey and gave so freely of their time, strength and love. As well, a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at CancerCare who do such wonderful work in such difficult circumstances. In addition, the family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Palliative Care unit.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
A thousand words won’t bring you back;
I know because I’ve tried.
Neither will a thousand tears;
I know because I’ve cried.
Like a butterfly in flight;
You drifted off to paradise.
A journey to the rainbow’s end;
Leaving broken hearts to mend.
