Dad passed away peacefully with family at his side, reading him his favourite Saturday morning newspaper.
He is survived by his children Susanne, Pamela, Russell and Lorna and their families as well as his siblings Gloria, Connie, Robert, Bill and Roland. He is predeceased by his beloved parents Russell and Jeannette Parent, and his siblings Elmer, Gennie, Marguerite, Marcel and Raymond.
Dad was born in Arborfield, Saskatchewan, but the family moved to the booming mining town of Timmins, Ontario before he was a year old. He had a keen sense of adventure and curiosity which drove him to choose to stay in Winnipeg while on a trip "out west" to the coast with his brothers in 1959. On the way back to Ontario, he told his brothers he was going to give it a go in Winnipeg and they said goodbye in front of the Legislative Building on a bright summer day. He said Winnipeg was an “alive and thriving place" and he never left.
He was very proud to be a Canadian and a Winnipegger and supported his community whether it was coaching and volunteering at the Fort Garry Community Club when the kids were little, supporting the Downtown Biz, or supporting his Profession. He was also proud of being a denturist and helped establish the Denturists Act in 1970 and the Denturist Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton.
He loved working so much and greatly appreciated his colleagues, staff and patients and was sure he would be returning to work soon, but it was not to be.
Dad loved time on the water and took on the challenge of building his own cottage near Pointe du Bois in the Whiteshell. The cottage became a gathering place for his kids, grandkids, and siblings where many memories were made fishing, building, boating or just enjoying a good chat.
He had a great sense of humour and was always curious and this made him a lifelong learner which he instilled in his children and grandchildren. We will miss you greatly Dad, Grandpa.
Due to the Pandemic, a private family service was held January 12, 2022 and a Celebration of Life will occur once everyone can gather.
The family is very grateful for the support of Dad's staff and business colleagues. They especially wish to thank Deer Lodge Centre, Dr. Henry, and the compassionate, professional team on 6 West, for providing Leon with such kind and respectful care.
Thank you also to all the family and friends around the globe that have sent love and support.
In keeping with his abiding love of his adopted home town, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Winnipeg Foundation.
