Martha was born September 13, 1945, in Balcarres Saskatchewan, to parents Paul and Annie Tyshkewich. Martha is survived by her sisters Irene Skolas, Pearl Chourney, Olga Piasta (Rob), Ann Gropp and the numerous nieces and nephews across Canada and her Granddaughter Vanessa.
Martha is predeceased by her Parents Paul and Annie Tyshkewich, her Brothers Boris, Nick, D’Metro, Paul, Andrew, her sisters Mary and Nettie and just recently her son Micheal.
Martha grew up on her family farm in Ituna, Saskatchewan. There she lived with her siblings till she finished high school. After high school, she knew it was time to leave home, so she followed in her sisters’ footsteps and moved away from the farm to start her own life. She found herself in Winnipeg Manitoba where she was proud to find her first job at the Winnipeg General Hospital, which is now part of the Health Science Center (HSC). Her early adulthood found her living in the big city with sisters Olga and Ann. Later in Martha’s career she also worked for an Insurance Company, this career change carried her through to her retirement.
Martha was a devoted mother to her son Michael. She took great pride in teaching Michael the Ukrainian culture and cuisine. Her favorite part was passing along her secrets to making perogies. Martha was fond of cooking perogies, and always looked forward to having them on her table when family would come visit. It was hard for her to relinquish this joy when her Parkinson’s started to restrict her ability to cook, but Michael was more than happy to step up and carry this on. Martha always felt she had something to give, it wasn’t much but she tried to do what she could to help those who needed it.
Martha led an uncomplicated life, her simple enjoyments came from having her son Michael cook for them, play Bingo, tackle word searches, and enjoy watching the world events on CNN. For those who knew Martha, you would know her as a strong willed, determined woman, and she was not afraid to speak her mind.
The family would like to extend a heart felt thank you to the staff at Vista Park Lodge who provided Martha with love, care, and support over the last 8 months. They helped her make a very difficult transition to her new home.
A very sincere thank you to the St. Boniface ER staff and 4th floor staff who made Martha’s last few hours as comfortable and compassionate as possible. Your dedication to see that Martha was cared for and kept comfortable to ease her in those final hours.
We as her family understand it takes very special people to work in Health Care, and we feel blessed to be fortunate enough that we had so many of these very special people along Martha’s final months. Your sacrifice and dedication to provide comfort, compassion and care are recognized, and greatly valued.
