He is predeceased by; his wife Rebecca and son Rodel, his parents Victoriano and Cristina Asuncion, his siblings Jacoba, Marciano, Rosa, Jacinta, Maria, and Martina.
Maximo Mamuad Asuncion was born on September 30, 1930 in Licab, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Being the second youngest child of Victoriano and Cristina Asuncion they lived a simple life in their small town where Maximo learned to become a farmer which also lead him to be part of the land reform for farmers of the Philippines. At the age of 24 he met his sweetheart, Rebecca Madrid and they married on February 9th, 1954. Together they had ten beautiful children; Danilo, Veronica (Epifano), Rodel, Helen Grace, Angelita (Ruel), Romulo (Rowena), Maximo "Rick" Jr, Rogelio, Nelia and Ronald (Zenaida).
In 1977 his eldest son Danilo immigrated to Canada and worked hard for six years to sponsor the family to follow. Tatay immigrated to Canada in 1983 with his wife and seven of their children (his two remaining children stayed back home in the Philippines). They settled in Winnipeg, MB, Canada where they were able to purchase their first home on Alverstone in the West End. Every day he would bike to work and in the winter his daughter, Helen would drive him to Imperial Roadway where he worked as a security guard until he was able to retire. Aside from work, Tatay and Nanay were the most involved grandparents to their many grandchildren; helping raise them to spending birthdays and holidays together in their home. It wasn’t until the passing of his sweetheart Rebecca (1999), that Maximo became a devoted member of the Igelsia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) for the last 25 years. He enjoyed fishing, biking in the neighborhood, thrifting, gardening, building and starting new projects. Many would say he was a jack of all trades.
Viewing/Lamay will be held on August 9, 2024 from 6:00pm to 12:00am at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
Internment will be held in the Philippines at a later date.
Special thanks to the staff of Health Sciences Centre Adult Emergency and Seven Oakes General Hospital (Level 5 - Unit 5) for all their kind, compassionate care they provided to Tatay during his last days. An extra special thank you Teclee (home care) who worked and took care of our Tatay for 9 years.
