Peacefully on March 28, 2022, Merle Florence Bryson passed away at the age of 92. Merle lived in Winnipeg, but formerly was from Thompson, Manitoba.
Merle was born on February 19, 1930, in Manitou, Manitoba along with her “mirror twin” Marjorie. The two girls weren’t just sisters, they grew up best friends. Being identical they liked to prank the teachers by switching places in school. According to Merle’s report cards she was an excellent speller, but she tanked at math and science.
Merle grew up, met and married Jack Bryson on May 6, 1950. They had two boys, Rick and Rod, before moving to Thompson in July of 1960. Two years later Merle had her cherished girl, Susan.
Merle was close to all her family. She was an awesome mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She accepted and loved us all unconditionally. She always was willing to listen, comfort, support, reassure or encourage however she could.
As an active grandmother she participated in all of our lives. Whether it was babysitting during a bonspiel, fixing lunch, making family suppers, knitting mitts and toques for family and friends, going to games and concerts, playing cards and board games, helping when kids got sick, or providing a safe haven for someone who needed comfort and a kind heart, she did it all and more. She was the most supportive and non-judgemental woman we may ever know. She was always there for us. For all of this and more, we will truly miss her.
Merle was a golfer and a curler. She loved to have people over to visit, play cards, or to party and dance. Merle loved music. Some of her favorite songs were “One Day at a Time”, “Green, Green Grass of Home” and “Please Release Me” to name a few. She also enjoyed Lawrence Welk, Gaither Gospel and Daniel O’Donnell.
After Jack passed away Merle continued to keep herself busy and involved with her family. She was dealt a hard blow when her daughter Susan passed away suddenly. It was hard to lose a child she was so close to. Merle herself, years later, was also diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment. She faced the challenge with an “I’m going to beat it” attitude and won! In both situations, Merle showed us how strong and resilient she was. She loved life with its simple pleasures and fought for them.
Twelve years ago, Merle moved to Lion’s Place in Winnipeg. Her grandkids had pretty much grown up, but she still kept close tabs by phone or in person. Lion’s Place offered Merle bridge and rummy nights, bingo which she helped to run, and many new people to meet. With her outgoing and personable manner, she made many wonderful friends. She baked muffins and goodies to share, enjoyed her 10 P.M. get together in the common area and her suppers with Rick. She FaceTimed with her great grandchildren. Merle was able to adapt to any situation always making the best of it. She was an amazing and much loved woman.
Merle is survived by her sons, Rick and Rod(Bev); her six grandchildren, Daniel(Julia), Beth(Jay), Thomas(Jane), Jeff(Katie), Sara and Jenny(Jeff); and her great-grandchildren, Aiden, Emma, Reid, Abby, Owen, Theo and Mila, with two more on the way; and associate members Ray and Doreen.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, and her daughter, Susan.
A special thank you to the caring staff at the Grace Hospital.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Merle’s memory to CancerCare Manitoba. Interment to follow in July.
