It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Phyllis Gutknecht, aged 93 and 4 months.
Phyllis is survived by her children Alan (Digna Tiopo, deceased), Donna Lobay (Bill, deceased), James and Gordon Gutknecht. Grandchildren Deanna (Richard Bruce), Christina (Kenneth Jackson), Andrea (Cyrille Crapoulet), Justin and Bryce. Great-grandchildren Tyler, Cody, Chantel, Samantha, Kyla, Dylan, Jessica, Connor, Brent, William, Matthew and Katrina.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Harold, parents Walter and Orpha, and all of her siblings Gladys, Charles, Robert, Arden, Walter, Brian, and her twin brother David.
Phyllis had a happy childhood growing up in Norwood, enjoying nature walks along the Seine River. Every year her family would rent a cabin and ride the train to Grand Beach to spend the summer.
Phyllis and Harold met at Advocate Press while working there in 1947. They were married two years later, September 9, 1949. They were married 66 years.
Mom and Dad enjoyed hosting many, many Sunday Roast Beef dinners for their family. After dinner, and dishes we would break out the cards and have a very competitive games of Contract Rummy, with lots of laughter.
Mom and Dad moved to Sterling House 10 years ago, just five minutes from their home of 44 years on Cordova Street in River Heights.
Phyllis was happy and content at Sterling House. She enjoyed sitting in the sun on her balcony with the park below, watching the geese, pelicans, and ducks swimming on the pond.
Mom was a very positive person, she always had a song in her heart and a smile on her lips, with a kind word for everyone.
Mom loved her family dearly, and we all loved her to the moon and back.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sterling House, St. Boniface Hospital, Jocelyn’s House, and mom’s Nurse Practitioner Janna Kingdon for the care and comfort they gave to our mom.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 10:00 am at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard
