With immense love and sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of Richard (Rick) Edwin Penner. He passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11th at the age of 80 years, surrounded by family and his favourite music.
Left to treasure his memory are his wife Marlene, daughters Colleen (Clark) Podaima and Michelle (Harry) Lowen and grandchildren Dale, Evan (Rebecca), Natalie (Chris), and Kyle, and brother-in-law Rick (Jan) Kullman, Chris (Jennifer), and Jennifer (Grant). He was predeceased by his parents Diedrich and Elizabeth, brothers Ivan and Alan, and parents-in-law Roy and Evelyn Kullman
Rick was born and raised in Morse Place and attended Salisbury School, and later, Miles Mac Collegiate. He met Marlene, the love of his life, at a Valentine’s Dance in 1959. They were married for 59 years.
He joined the Transcona Police Department in 1964 and worked across a number of units, including the communications centre and training division. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and would go on to retire from the Winnipeg Police Service after 30 years.
With an extraordinary sense of humour and a love for music (in particular, playing the accordion), Rick loved a get-together and cherished time spent with his friends and family. He adored his grandchildren and took tremendous pride in their accomplishments — he enjoyed nothing more than the many summers spent together at his lakefront cottage at Dorothy Lake. Between his sharp wit and remarkable kindness, our Papa will be deeply missed.
We would like to offer special thanks to family for their continued love and support and also to the Colwell family. A private family gathering will take place at a later date to celebrate Rick’s life.
