It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful husband and most loving DaddyBear. On Wednesday October 26, 2014, after a very brief struggle with cancer, Bob passed away at Riverview Health Centre. He passed quickly and peacefully, with his beautiful wife & doting daughter at his side. Bob was 71 years old.
Bob’s memory will be celebrated by his wife of 37 years, Marlene; his favourite daughter Kimmie (Sean); his granddaughters Dynika and Raihanne; brothers Orton and Bill (Gisele); mother-in-law Viola Philpott; sister-in-law Karen Mozdzen; brother-in-law Fred Philpott (Barb); his nieces and nephews; Kerri, Morene and Maya Philpott; Kammy, Korey and Keith Mozdzen, Andrea, Cameron and Renee Frayer; and all of his friends that he’s met through the years.
He was predeceased by his father Orton (1979); mother Marie (1990) and his younger brothers Ron (2004) and Barry (2011).
Bob was born July 23, 1943 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan to Orton and Marie; the first of 5 boys. He graduated from Tec Voc and was a member of the chess club, air cadets and many other groups and organizations.
On July 16, 1977, Bob married his “Sweetie #1” Marlene Joan at Dunara Church in Petersfield, Manitoba. In November of 1980, Bob’s “Sweetie #2” Kimberly Roberta, joined the crew and the family was perfectly complete. Marlene and Kim were Bob’s pride and joy and he never missed the chance to tell you so.
One of Bob’s first jobs was in the barber and beauty supply business. Later in life he became the proud owner of a ‘previously perused’ bookstore, called The Bookcase. Dad loved to chat with everyone that came in to the store and made countless friendships during those years. He loved listening to the CBC radio at the store and joked that he ‘was paying for it, so he should probably listen to it’.
Bob was a regular on the CKY show S’Kiddle Bits, where he turned plain pieces of paper into magic before your eyes. He was happy to volunteer his skills at the Japanese Cultural Centre’s Origami Club and for their children’s program; he lent his time to Folklorama, Winnipeg Children’s Festival, Brandon Folk Festival, Winnipeg Public Library’s summer program and spent over 30 years volunteering with the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
He was a member of the St. James Cooking Club, Tuxedo Lawn Bowling Club, Charleswood Curling Club, The Great Herd of Bison’s of the Fertile Plains Sherlock Holmes Society of Winnipeg and was a member of the Coalition of Manitoba Motorcycle Club. He also was a part-time model in a fashion show with the St. James Seniors.
He lived his life to make other people happy and was thoughtful, gracious and kind. He loved reading books (especially mysteries) and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He loved animals, especially cats and was in awe of the great-apes, who he always called his ‘distant cousins’.
Whenever you had a free moment (and even if you didn’t), Bob would take the opportunity to tell you a story and to make you a bit of origami magic. He put his heart and soul into every piece of paper that he folded and the smiles on people’s faces that folded for was all he needed in return.
Bob’s memorial service will be held Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 10:00 am at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. All are welcome.
Marlene and Kim would like to thank everyone who supported them through this difficult time. There are far too many of you to name individually and for that we are blessed. Special thank-you to Kendrick Computing for fixing Bob’s computer (without you, we would have lost all the photos stored on his hard drive) and a big thank-you for coming to the house in the cold to deliver it to us. Thanks to Marielle and Eric and Nancy for the delivery of food, flowers, and of course, the wine.
The outpouring of love that everyone has shown us, has brought light into these difficult days. Bob would be so honoured and proud of all of you for showing such compassion.
Thank-you to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for your kindness and a huge hug to the staff at Riverview Health Centre for your support and empathy during this time. We thank-you for helping our sweet Bob pass with dignity and peace; we thank you for everything you did. We are so grateful that we made it there in time, so that we could be by his side for his final breath.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of his daughter’s Relay for Life team “Bob’s Cure-ious Cats”. Cheques can be made out to the Canadian Cancer Society and mailed to Jill Somers, 193 Sherbrook Street, R3C 2B7 OR donations can be made out to Craig Street Cats Animal Shelter, 489 Madison Street, R3J 1J2 in memory of Bob Frayer.
