

Shirley Ann Akins (nee Bruce)March 19, 1934 – January 17, 2010Married to Brian Akins, March 8, 1958. 51 years of love and companionship.Shirley attended Gordon Bell High Scholl, United College and then went in to Nursing under the old system of nursing student in residence training at General Hospital (Health Science Centre). She graduated with the class of 1956 B.Shirley has many friendships from her student nursing days. She kept up with these friendships and was active in arranging class reunions.Shirley principally worked at Health Science Centre as an operating room nurse.Following this, Shirley returned to University and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree (Micro Biology Major) in 1964.In later years she worked with her husband at Wallace and Akins Ltd. and Akins Building Consultants Ltd. Remaining active right up to her death.She is survived by her husband Brian, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Doreen and Bill Akins, with nephew Clive and niece Susan and family as well as sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and George Akins with nephew Bruce and niece Kathleen and their families.Shirley was close to her friends.She had a saying “If you want a friend - be a friend” and she followed this rule.In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to the World Vision Haiti, 1 World Drive, Mississauga, ON L5T 2Y4 or 1-800-268-4888.Funeral Service will take place on Friday, January 29, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home.
