It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our beloved mother, Susan Kimberly Gilmore, on January 27, 2026, with her children, soon-to-be son-in-law, and sisters by her side.
Susan (nee Kowaliuk) leaves behind two children, Riley Gilmore and Bailey Gilmore (Meyer Nell); sisters Debbi Wallace (Bryan) and Carol Kowaliuk; and nephew Kristopher Kowaliuk (Aimee). She was predeceased by both parents, Peter and Olga; infant sister Victoria; and various aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Susan was born February 3, 1962, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She graduated from Elmwood High School in 1980, and later completed a Community Support Worker diploma at Herzing College. She had a diverse employment history that she balanced with raising her two children, whom she described as her pride and joy, planning their school events, and working tirelessly behind the scenes with Riley’s hockey teams, most recently the Charleswood Hawks. After “retirement”, she kept busy working at the M&M’s Tuxedo location, which she affectionately referred to as “my store”.
Susan also had a long volunteer history with various organizations. At the time of her passing, she had completed 78 whole blood donations with Canadian Blood Services. She was proud knowing that her blood was used to treat and support newborns in need.
A dedicated Winnipeg Jets fan, Susan held season tickets for the Jets 1.0 and was devastated when they left the city in 1996. Upon their return to the city, she planned her life around their games – we’re sure her cheers could be heard around the neighbourhood when they scored – and her car was easily identifiable, often flying multiple Jets flags.
Susan was looking forward to Bailey & Meyer’s wedding later this year, and hoped more than anything to one day become a grandma.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susan’s honour to the Winnipeg Humane Society or D’Arcy’s ARC – Susan often reminded us all that she liked animals much more than people.
No formal service will take place. A celebration of Susan’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson "In the Park", 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
