Born on June 1, 1934, in Sidhwan Kalan, Punjab (District Ludhiana), India, he grew up in a hardworking farming family. After completing his education in Punjab, he began his career in a gypsum mine in Bikaner, Rajasthan in 1950. He was the first in his family to leave the village and step away from farming.
While working in the mine he started studying stenography and in 1960 he joined the Northern Railway in Jalandhar. In 1967, Papa Ji moved his family to Delhi to continue his career with the Northern Railway. Papa Ji’s work with the Railway took him across India and later to Algeria for 5 years, where he completed his career in 1989.
Even though his work took him across India, he always went above and beyond for his immediate and extended family. Papa Ji devoted both his time and his financial resources to ensuring that his extended family were well established in their careers and household affairs.
On July 1, 1990, Papa Ji immigrated to Canada to be with his children and grandchildren. True to his tireless nature, he continued working for another thirteen years before retiring after 52 years of service. Following his retirement, he dedicated himself to being a loving and steady presence in the lives of his grandchildren.
Among their cherished memories is his patient and joyful teachings—he proudly taught each of them how to ride a bicycle, math tables, and handwriting.
A gifted linguist, he spoke Urdu, English, Farsi, French, Hindi and Punjabi, reflecting his curiosity, adaptability, and rich life experience.
Papa Ji will also be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, whom he deeply cared for and cherished as his own.
He will be remembered for his dedication to family, his unmatched work ethic, and the wisdom, warmth, and love he shared throughout his long and remarkable life.
