It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Douglas Buchannon at Seven Oaks General Hospital on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, with his daughters by his side.
Wayne was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on May 16, 1944 to parents George Edward Buchannon and Edna Gladys Buchannon (Barker).
Wayne was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Michelle (Shelly) Yallop, whom he married on June 17, 1972 and had 2 daughters, Dallas (1975) and Dana (1977). They settled in St. Vital, Winnipeg where he lived until he passed and where he made many lifelong friends.
He graduated high school at Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute in 1962 and studied chemistry at Toronto Metropolitan University (Ryerson), achieving a diploma in 1966. He went on to complete a Bachelor of Science at the University of Manitoba in 1974.
Wayne worked at AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada) from 1966-1968 and the University of Manitoba, Chemistry Department where he ran the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory from 1968 until his retirement in 2014, 46 years! After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids, making new friends, reconnecting with old ones, going on hunting trips and traveling as much as he could. He was a passionate learner and his desire to expand his knowledge about the world around him never slowed down. He spent many hours still learning about chemistry, mathematics and physics, even in retirement.
Wayne was a great father, husband, colleague, neighbor and friend to so many. He was known for his kind and honest nature, willingness to help out anyone who needed help at any time, and his sharp wit and great sense of humour.
Wayne was also predeceased by his parents, brothers Ken, Jack, Don, and Jim Buchannon, sister Barbara Wolfe and brothers-in-law Arnold Wolfe and Winston Wilson.
Wayne will be dearly missed by his daughter Dallas Irene Buchannon, Paul Santolin (partner) and their daughter Layla Elizabeth, of Vancouver; his daughter Dana Joanna Buchannon, Christopher Gamble (husband) and their children Colin Christopher, Austin Andrew, and Emily Michelle, of Stony Mountain, Manitoba; and his sister Janice Wilson and family of Wawota, Saskatchewan. He will also be missed by his dear extended family across Canada, his Vista Avenue family, his University of Manitoba friends and the many other great friends he has made over the years.
A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 9Z9 or a charity of your choice.
