Winston Tom Talbot

JUNE 28, 1909 – APRIL 19, 2013

It is with sadness and fullness that Winston’s life on earth has ended.

After completing a full life of 103 years we will miss him dearly, and treasure the memories and qualities we so admire.

He was born June 28, 1909, in the town of Yeovil, located on the Somerset/Dorset border, England.

Wanting a better life for his family, Winston’s father, Herbert, first emigrated from England to Winnipeg to seek work.

Winston, at the age of five, then followed with his mother, Louisa, to Canada.

He was raised in Winnipeg’s west end in a house on Sherburn Street attending Greenway, General Wolfe and Daniel McIntyre schools.

During the Depression he never remained idle being an enterprising and respected door-to-door salesman, selling Fuller Brushes and Watkins’ products.

Winston met his wife, Reta Shortreed at Elim Chapel Young People’s. They were married on December 28, 1940 at First Presbyterian Church, Portage Ave at Canora.

During WWII, Winston served in the Canadian Army in the Ordinance Corp. on the East Coast at Halifax, NS.

After discharge, he returned to Winnipeg and pursued an apprenticed position becoming a full licensed plumber. This then became his full time work at Deer Lodge Hospital until his retirement.

For many years, Winston and Reta shared their Christian talents, working with and assisting children at Sunday Schools.

Their main devotion was to Talbot Mission Sunday School in Elmwood where they both served many years in positions of Superintendent and Secretary Treasurer. They both attended Church of The Way here.

During retirement, they became accomplished travelers with trips across Canada, to the United States, England and Europe.

After Reta’s passing, and when age became a burden, Winston found refuge at Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, and later at Oakview Extendicare Home. He was deeply grateful for the compassionate care he received at both places from the devoted and loving staffs.

For everything accomplished in Winston’s life he desired to express thanks to Jesus Christ, who he accepted early in his life as his personal savior.

A “celebration of life” for Winston will be held on Thursday, April 25th, 2013 at 10:30 am at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg.

Interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery.

In his memory, donations, if desired, will be gratefully received for the new children’s camp being built near Hadishville, Manitoba by Living Bible Explorers with offices at 600 Burnell Street, Winnipeg, MB R3G 2B7
