

Dr. Betty Weaver Talbert, 86, died Saturday, August 26 in Winston-Salem, N.C. after an extended illness. Betty was born and grew up in Nashville, TN as the only child of Julia and Charles Weaver. She earned a BA in English and History from the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, an MA in History from Vanderbilt and a PhD in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She taught at Young Harris College (GA) and Salem College (NC) and served as an interim Assistant Chaplain at Wake Forest University from 1979-1980. Betty earned a certificate in spiritual direction from the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation of Washington, D. C. and was one of three founders of Trinity Center, Inc. of Winston-Salem, where she served as a spiritual director and retreat leader from 1982-1996. In 1996 Dr. Talbert moved to Waco, Texas, where she founded the spiritual formation program at the George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University and served as its Director until her retirement in 2010.
Betty was an active church member all her life, serving in many capacities at Wake Forest Baptist Church, First Baptist on Fifth, and Knollwood Baptist in Winston-Salem and as a deacon at Calvary Baptist in Waco, TX. She developed spiritual formation programs for churches and seminaries, wrote spiritual formation manuals for various denominations and created programs on how to use Christian spirituality in therapy settings. She taught theological education classes in the areas of church history, theology for Christian Life, theology of devotional practice and faith development theory.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Charles H. Talbert. She is survived by her daughter Caroline O’Neil of Los Angeles, CA, her son, Richard Talbert (Amanda) of Winston-Salem and two granddaughters: Emily Beroth and Rachel Beroth.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 3 at Vogler Funeral & Cremations at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3815 Yadkinville Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
