

Harriet Spieles Cart, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2021 at her home in Winston-Salem, NC after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was born February 2, 1934 in Medford, Wisconsin to Cyril and Lorraine Spieles. She moved many times during her childhood finally settling in Louisville, KY in 1946 to attend high school. Harriet became the department secretary at the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville, KY where she met Eldred Nolen Cart, who became her husband in September of 1956. With his job as a chemical engineer with Exxon, they moved to Baton Rouge, La; Houston, Tx and New Providence, NJ before retiring to Winston-Salem, NC in 1999.
Harriet and Eldred were active members of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem for almost 20 years where they were involved with Mission Friends, helped with children’s choir, and were involved in the Senior Adult’s Ministry. She loved gardening, sewing, cooking, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Harriet is survived by her children, Tim, Larry (and his wife Dana) and Don (and his wife Mary Beth) and her grandchildren Jon, Cathryn, David, Andrew and Kristen. She is also survived by her younger sister Sharon Becht (and her husband Jay).
She is predeceased by her husband (of 61 years), Eldred, who passed away March 19, 2018.
A small memorial service will be held at Vogler Funeral Home at Forsyth Memorial Park on Thursday, July 8, 2021, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.
Her family would like to thank Piedmont Home Health Services for their excellent care of their mom during her last 4 years because with their help and the assistance of Trellis Supportive Care during these past 13 months, she was able to remain comfortably at home.
In lieu of flowers, Harriet would love a donation in her name to Compassion International or Samaritan’s Purse –both Christian humanitarian aid organizations that they both supported for many, many years.
