She is survived by two children, William Felton McLaughlin, Jr. (Anna Taaffe) of Albany, NY and Mary Millis McLaughlin of Winston-Salem, NC; four grandchildren Mary Katherine Goldin of San Diego, CA, Elizabeth Adelaide Taaffe McLaughlin and Ceiligh Cornelia Taaffe McLaughlin of New York, NY, Henry Hunter Petersen of Albany, NY; and one great-grandchild Theodosia Goldin Lee of San Diego, CA. She is also survived by her brother John V. Hunter III of Raleigh, NC, niece Eleanor Armfield Hunter of Fairfax, VA and her children Wade Armfield Auvil, Eleanor Adelaide Auvil, and Henry Allan Auvil.
Sallie Millis graduated from R.J. Reynolds high school in 1955 and Hollins College (now University) in 1959. After a European Tour she worked in New York, NY for the brokerage firm Reynolds & Co. where she met her first husband William Felton (Bill) McLaughlin. When her children were older, she worked for the Winston-Salem Symphony, Wake Forest University president’s office with Dr. James Ralph Scales, Graylyn Conference Center and retired as administrator of Piedmont Opera under Norman Johnson.
Sallie Millis was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, past member of the Windsor Garden Club, the Huntcliff Book Club, and the Junior League of Winston-Salem. She enjoyed tennis at Westwood Club, gardening, travel, bridge, and was an avid reader and crossword puzzler. She also had a wonderful circle of friends from all parts of her life with whom she shared many good times and adventures.
She felt blessed with a large family that included 18 first cousins in the Armfield family with whom she spent summers at the family home Armhurst in Myrtle Beach, SC. She brought her children there when they were young and later to Litchfield Beach, SC. It was there that she brought the next generation of cousins to vacation together and form lasting lifetime bonds. We would be remiss if we did not include her extended family that included her beloved furry “children” – Squiggles, Gus, and Chance, the latter two of which were a little quick on the draw to bite anyone who came too close to her!
Her family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation for the loving care she received from all the staff at Arbor Acres, in particular the nurses on her hall Susan and Jennifer and her special friend Tanya, as well as her private caregivers Ada Farmer and Cherry Reeves who were by her side for many years.
A memorial service will be held in Fellowship Hall at Arbor Acres at 11:30 am Saturday April 1, with a private burial in the Dr. John V. Hunter plot of the Old Asheboro Cemetery at 2:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forsyth Humane Society, 4881 Country Club Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
