Our beloved mother, wife, sister and friend, Sybil Adkins, age 87, passed away Monday, December 25, 2023. Ironic that Christmas was her favorite holiday. Her mom, Cora and dad, Bill, always made Christmas extremely special. My mom was a very strong woman. She definitely told you exactly how she felt, getting this trait from her dad, Pop. Nanny taught her to get what she wanted and she did!
She grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio and her favorite possessions were her whiteware pottery
from Hall China Co and her Fiesta!
She fell in love with my dad, Arthur Adklns, after High School. The both attended East Liverpool High School and she loved going to her High School Reunions and spending time with her friends. I can picture my parents now, doing the jitter bug, dancing in heaven to her favorite singer, Frank Sinatra or to their favorite song “Unforgettable.” She missed my dad so much for a very long time.
Her first born, was Michael. Boy, she loved him so much! I always teased her because she knew Mike’s full birthday dates and not mine and my younger brother. My mother started a Legacy! My parents bought Art’s Sandwich Shop in 1972. Michael has been continuing her legacy running Art’s for 51 years. Wow! What an accomplishment! She loved running the shop and had no regrets, only that it took her too long to get where she wanted to be in building her business.
Arts is a family owned and operated business. Michael’s oldest son, Christopher worked at Art’s his son Jeff, works at Arts today. Come and have him make you the Best Cheesesteak Sub of your Life! She is leaving behind her great grandsons, Nash, Jett and Jase. She was always so proud of her kid, grandkids and great grandkids!
Her middle child, only girl, with one L, Me, Michele. I’ve been so lucky! Having the Best Mom Ever! I always wanted a sister, but kind of glad it was only me. I was a daddy’s girl and a mama’s girl! She loved me with her whole self and I loved her the same. She was spunky and I’m sure I got that from her. She loved being a grandma to my twin boys, Zack and Jake. Being the most generous parents, they took my family into their home while building our home. She was always so giving and loving. In her later years, I got her to paint, when I couldn’t get her to stop watching NCI or Blue Bloods. We continually argued about how many walking laps around my driveway I would make her do. How about the bribery to get her into my pool to exercise. She would always do it for my boys and she would love it especially when I was playing some Frank Sinatra music! I would always have chores for her, cut up vegetables or fold laundry, to help her movement. She always would tell others, Michele puts me to work. She always slept solid at my house. She loved loved loved my fur babies, Louie and Rocky! It was her mission to sneak food to Louie and he was by her side ever since. The newest tiny pup, Rocky, she couldn’t keep her hands off him. So much LOVE!
Of course, she loved her baby. Her youngest child, Mark, she loved dearly. No matter how busy Mom’s schedule was, she never missed one of Mark’s basketball games. She never let anyone out yell her or out cheer her. I think this played into her competitive spirit, which rubbed off on all of her kids. She finally got her granddaughters, Abigail and Aubrey. One of her favorite games, Rummikub she enjoyed playing together with his family. Being a nurse, Mark was grateful for the time he spent with Mom providing daily care for her. Mark and mom shared their dog Izzy, a pup mom loved so much. Mark would say she loved Izzy more than him because the first thing she would ask for is “where’s my baby,” meaning Izzy, not Mark. She was an only child for 15 years and then came her two siblings, Elayne and Carol. She loved them both with all her orneriness. Family mattered the most to my mom.
She had so many friends that loved her and she loved them. You all know who you are because they’re too many to recognize. She was part of the Executive Women International, loved her jewelry, loved playing cards and bingo and loved shopping on QVC.
I am so proud to be her daughter! To have been loved by someone so much and have loved someone so much. One day leaving my home years ago, she said to me “Had Fun at your Party” and she had the biggest smile. I said “ I didn’t have a party mom, it’s just you and me?” Since that time we would always say to each other “ Had Fun at your Party” Well now, she is at the biggest Party ever!
She passed away peacefully in her sleep in my home. She had an amazing party Christmas Eve with her family by her side. Her last supper was a Cheesesteak Omelet made by Mike and her famous Mac n Cheese, her personal recipe. As my dear friend, Maryann said “ She was ready to have Christmas Day with my dad and her beautiful friends” I will hold dearly the day I see the light and will be with her again with our Lord, God.
