Winter Haven – Al Hays, 83, passed away Monday, December 26, 2011, due to respiratory failure.
Mr. Hays was born on January 31, 1928, in Deland, FL, the son of Thomas Sewell Hays and Marguerite Steffen Hays. He married his wife, Ann Reynolds Richardson, on December 19, 1949. He worked as a physical education instructor and an elementary principal in the Polk County School System for over 25 years. He also served as the tennis pro for the City of Winter Haven, developing an instructional program for youth and adults, for 22 years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hays was preceded in death by four siblings and a grandson. He is survived by his wife, Ann R. Hays; his sister, Grace Lee; five children – Steffen Bentley (Pat), Winter Haven, Fred Hays (Robin), Winter Haven, Tom Hays (Mary), Minneapolis, MN, Perry Suk (Bill), Raleigh, NC, and Meg Lemelin (Greg), Kannapolis, NC; ten grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on January 2, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, 637 6th St. NW, Winter Haven, FL.
