Winter Haven- Lieutenant Commander, Mary M. Woods, age 97, of Winter Haven, FL passed away Friday, May 27, 2011.
She was a native of Chillicothe, OH, who came to Winter Haven in 1970 from New Orleans, LA. She was a retired Lieutenant Commander of the U.S. Navy having served during WWII in the Intelligence Office of the Headquarters, Eightth Naval District in New Orleans, LA.
She was a graduate of Miami University of Oxford, OH and did post graduate study at New York University. She received her military training at Smith College, Northampton, MA and the Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey, California.
She was a life member of the Retired Officers Association, a charter member of Citrus Center Chapter of the Retired Officers Association, a charter member of the Naval Intelligence Retirees of Florida, charter life member of Theater Winter Haven, a member of the United Way of Central Florida Leadership Giving Association, a member of the Association of former Intelligence Officers, the Naval Intelligence Professionals and an origional member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Winter Haven, FL.
She was the widow of the late LCDR John (Mac) McSwain Woods, Jr. She is survived by numerous surrogate grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, June 4, 2011 at St Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven. Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: Winter Haven Hospital Foundation, St. Matthew Catholic Church Group, or Theater Winter Haven.
