My condolences to Evanne and the whole Mines family.  I met John freshman year at FSC as we both played on the soccer team.  One of my favorite memories was John, Howard, Hank and I creating the Mai Tai lounge in one of our freshman dorm rooms.  John would give you the shirt off his back if that's what you needed.  Again, my condolences.


My heart aches over the loss of John, and for his family's sorrow.  John was a great friend to me for more than 20 years.  We played soccer together, and he was an outstanding fishing buddy.  I learned so much from John, about boating and fishing, but also about being a good person.  I will cherish the time we had together and the memories we made - cheers!

I’m gutted. John was one of the most caring people I’ve been blessed to know. Mind you,  living next door to John and Howard Penney was always funny and …interesting.  An awesome player and great teammate, his playing style was smooth and effortless. John made my final 2 yrs at FSC a lot more fun on the field and off.
But my favorite memory of John was one day in my senior year. A street preacher was on the wall outside the cafeteria preaching away. Many people, most people laughed at him, mocked him. But I walked by with John and he stopped and listened. He was dismayed that so many people dismissed this man as a crackpot, a looney. He engaged the man for a few moments, and then we went on our way. It left a deep impression on me to this day. He was compassionate and cared for everyone. Strong in his faith, a good friend to know, God blessed me greatly to have known John. 

I  knew I liked John long before I met him in person.  I was dating Rebecca (his sister) while we were stationed in Cameroon, West Africa while serving with the U.S. Peace Corps.  I wanted to get a mountain bike from the states, John was able to make my dreams come true.  He went to the local bike shop and picked the perfect one, paid for it (to be reimbursed), and stored it until arrangements could be made to ship it.
As I married into the family John was a role model for me to follow as a loving husband and family man.  We shared many of the same interests and I always enjoyed our time together.  Later, as my family grew he became a wonderful Uncle to our boys and provided them with many memories and moments.  These included boat rides, tubing and surfing on the lake, hanging out at the cabin, and deep sea fishing excursions.
I will cherish all of those memories.

I am heartbroken to hear this news.  John and I were always close and enjoyed doing a variety of the same things.  Loved playing soccer with and against him (mostly with), and always the beers in the parking lot after.  We did a few work related projects together that were mutually beneficial.  Loved boating and the water.  Over many years  we also occasionally met to waterski before work.  One morning he invited his good friend Jeff Turner (Orlando Magic) to slalom ski with us.  Jeff is a very large man and one time when he was getting up on one ski he let go of the rope and the ski rope and handle shot into the boat and hit the windshield.  Fortunately I ducked!

I always loved being with him and am sick that this has happened.

The world is definitely less bright without John Mines. I am so fortunate to have known and loved  John my entire adult life and will truly miss his warm smile, gentle soul, and the big hugs he freely gave whenever I was with him. When my lifelong friend found her soul mate in John, I couldn’t have picked a more perfect side kick for her. Both of them exemplify everything good about living and loving well. Always thinking of others and fiercely loving family and friends in ways that make you feel extraordinary. Some of my fondest memories of John include sunset boat rides(picking up artichoke dip at Hillstone until they wouldn’t let him dock and do it), a variety of concerts over the years (Yacht Rock Revue suited the Captain) and him never being embarrassed by us dancing in the aisles, soccer games, margaritas on cinco de mayo, countless dinners and beers shared over the years and the yummy fresh fish he would share after a successful day of fishing. His generosity was such a part of who he was. When Evanne’s girl crews would gather either at their home or elsewhere, John always embraced the sometimes silly, sometimes eye roll worthy time with a smile. He loved Evanne so he loved her tribe! That’s what I will miss most - seeing him love his loves - Evanne, Logan, Matt & Alayna, his family and many friends, boating, fishing and enjoying the simplicities of life. My life was made better by knowing and loving John. RIP Captain John 🙏❤️😇

Words escape me and I'm saddened beyond description that John has left our earthly world.  He was a gift to so many and his friendship meant a great deal to me.  He (and Evanne) were examples of those gifts from Susan's roster of friends and I'm already missing his smile, dry wit, and insights.  There's no way our recent Fishing excursion (December 31, 2021) will ever be forgotten, and I'll cherish that outing and the memories of our lunches, hospital chats, Volvo experiences and many other times together for the remainder of my days.  Thank you, John, for the legacy of your wonderful wife, family, overwhelming kindness, and an expansive footprint of friends.

Uncle John will always be treasured in my heart. He was the type of person who always had a comforting, accepting presence. Although he was very peaceful, he always knew the right moment for a witty joke or insightful comment. My favorite memories with Uncle John will always be when he used to take us out tubing. He always got a kick out of making us fly off the tube, or from watching me push my sister Izzy off the tube (lol). Uncle John was also always very excited for the Turkey Trot, and despite me and my sister’s yearly grumblings about waking up at 6 am on Thanksgiving, he always killed the race. We miss you Uncle John and we will never forget you <3

Uncle John was truly one of a kind; a selfless husband, uncle, dad, and friend. He made it his mission to ensure everyone around him felt like they had a place, and if they didn't, he was the first to open his door and welcome them home. He made his nieces his daughters, and their friends, his. Whether it was a tube ride, playing music from the infamous "barnacle", or being the first to eat our broken "Kaleidoscope" cookies, he made everyone feel deeply loved. We will all miss him, more than words can express.

This is hard core proof that only the good die young.  This is way to soon, unfair, and absolutely gut wrenching.    I am sickened that I did not check in with John more often. 

I was a teammate,  friend after college, and true disciple of John Mines.  John served as captain of  my freshman and sophomore soccer seasons at Florida Southern- those were John's Junior and Senior seasons. 

I remember John had a contagious presence and inclusiveness that was calming to a nervous incoming freshman.  He was inclusive 
and made me  feel valued  and that I belonged.  It inspired me and created this incredible desire to follow and work for him because you knew If John was a part of it - it was going to be the best way and lead to the best result.  One of my teammates called him the nucleus and that summed him up.  We truly looked up to and had great respect and loved being around him. 

He was a equally amazing soccer player.  I always knew we had a chance against anyone because John was passionate about the game and could match up with anyone skill wise and was mentally tough.  I think if the MLS was formed in  John's prime,  John might have had a chance to make a roster.  He was gracious in victory and defeat and always had a quick and witty dry sense of humor to  bring perspective to any situation.  It was always the right one.   John was first class. 

This is a shocking and devastating loss for me.   I have not seen john in 20 years but always knew I could pick up the phone and it would be like we hadn't missed a beat.  I cannot fathom the pain for his immediate family and all that had day to day dealings with him.  I am so very sorry for your loss. 

Life just got a lot more fragile without John Mines.

I am so sorry for the entire family and friends.. I know nothing that Im saying will make it easier but I will remember him doing the things he enjoyed fishing loving the out doors...... Captain John...  RIP ...... My prayers to each and everyone of you.....  Rose Young. 

John was a great neighbor and his passing a real shock. For years we woke up early to waterski in one of our vintage ski boats. Drinking coffee and chatting while watching the sun rise, then water skiing -  a great way to start the day. I really appreciated our authentic conversations, without banter. I'll always remember the cobia we caught from his fishing boat, as well as the fish he occasionally brought over from other trips . RIP John, enjoy your reward for an ethical life well lived. Prayers for the family. 

So sorry, Evanne! I have been thinking of you and your sweet boys nonstop. You all remain in our thoughts and prayers! Much love!

I was so shocked to hear of John’s passing.  My prayers and sympathy are with his precious and loving wife and family. Love 


John was warm & caring, soft & gentle, compassionate & kind. Being around him meant feeling totally accepted and effortlessly comfortable. He was the type to hug you every time he saw you, and snuggling into his cozy arms I felt safe and always protected. 

I was his “favorite DIL” (Daughter-In-Law), a phrase he’d say often. He told me how proud he was of me and how happy he was that his son married such an amazing woman who reminded him so much of his wife. He told me how proud he was of Matt, the amazing son he raised, and how “no dad has ever been more proud” than he is of his. 

I always admired how completely and totally satisfied he was of everything he had built and never wanted or needed anything more than what was in front of him. “Alayna, you’ve got an amazing husband, two awesome dogs, a great house, a loving family, great friends. That’s livin’ the good life.”

He’d walk around barefoot even when it was cold outside, and was always wearing something with a fish on it (socks, his belt, etc). He loved nothing more than to be out on the water and showed me how to reel in a snapper and how to hold a king fish so it’s teeth looked spooky in the fish photo! 

John was the best FIL (Father-In-Law) the world has ever known. I cherished his wisdom, his kindness, his love for nature and animals, his appreciation for life, his gentleness, his big heart, his family-first mentality and above all, I am so grateful for the man he raised, my husband, Matt Mines. So much of John lives on through Matt, and for that, I am at peace and eternally grateful. 

John, I love you. Thank you for being my friend and mentor when I needed you. I will forever cherish the time we spent together talking on the dock, sitting on the porch, eating next to you at family dinners, being on the water, learning how to drive a boat.. We will tell our future children great tales of what “captain John” was like, and how we feel your presence on the water and always in our hearts.

We were shocked and deeply saddened by the news of John's passing.  Our family mourns his loss as we so enjoyed spending  time with John, Evanne and the entire Mines family.  We are especially heartsick for our son-in-law, Matt Mines, and our daughter, Alayna (Burton) Mines, who loved - and adored - John because of the kind, generous and amazing person he was.  The more we got to know John and Evanne, the more it became evident that they were "family first" people.  John had an especially profound impact on Matt.  I was so happy to hear John say how proud he was of Matt during a birthday toast that took place just a few short weeks ago at Matt and Alayna's home.   John was an amazing human being whose enthusiasm and positivity was contagious to everyone around him.  We love you, John, and miss you so much.

So sorry to hear this shocking news. John was a super intelligent and fine man, who exuded kindness and goodness.  His love for his wife and family, as well as his faith, always stood out to me.  We worked very closely together for 8 years, all of which I enjoyed.  Godspeed to him and sincere condolences to his wife and sons.

A massive, massive loss!!!  
Some of us know what it is like to lose someone, someone so close to your heart.  John Mines was that guy!   I met John about 11 years ago. John and Evanne (John's wife) helped me find a facility when my ex-wife was ill with Alzheimer/Dementia and they'd found us a place. I can't thank them enough.   One year ago in July, July 19 to be exact. John, Xavier, and I went deep-sea fishing. Let me tell you, John was a pro. He stood up in front of the boat on the way out to sea throwing net-catching baits, the waves were so strong that I would have fallen off the boat, yet he caught more than enough baits for us to use. He then showed Xavier and me how sportsmanship he really was catching fish.  John was truly a gentleman, a friend, and an excellent footballer, one that was always in a positive spirit and a smile on his face. He will surely be missed by his family, friends, soccer friends, and the soccer community. RIP!

So very sorry to hear about John.    Many fond memories playing soccer alongside him and so enjoyed his companionship.    Good spiritual man that loved his family and friends and will certainly be missed by many .  Prayers for his family at this time.    Rest in heavenly peace John.

John was a true friend, wonderful player and teammate on the soccer pitch, always gracious to his fellow man.  I admired his  passions for soccer, fishing and family.  RIP Johnny, we will all miss you very much. 

John and his beautiful family were always so gracious and giving with their time, home and boat for the soccer community here in Orlando. I always loved seeing him on the field and his smile would brighten the day. One of the most kind and giving people I have ever met.
