The funeral mass for the late Elizabeth Anne Muchowski, Glenavon, Saskatchewan, Canada who died on April 20, 2004 at the age of 85 years was celebrated in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary R.C. Church, Glenavon, Saskatchewan, Canada on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 10:30 a.m., by Rev. Ed Hengen. Interment of cremated remains followed in the Parish Cemetery. Prayers were held in the church Friday evening. The family considered everyone present to be honorary attendants.
The following was taken from the eulogy as given by daughter, Theresa Coupal.
Elizabeth was born on April 3, 1919 to Jacob and Mary Zaba (nee Malach) on the farm between Candiac and Glenavon. She was the eldest of nine children. Mom attended Belfast School as a child. Dad and mom were married in Candiac on June 30, 1936, a union that spanned almost 68 years. In the fall of 1936 they set up house on a farm south of Odessa. It was here that Joe and Mary Anne were born. In 1940 they relocated to a farm north of Candiac – the farm which his son, Stanley and daughter-in-law, Laura now own. Two more children were born at this location, Stanley in 1941 and myself three years later.
Mom was definitely a “traditional mother” for her era. She was a meticulous housekeeper and she loved to cook and share her bounty with family and friends. We spent all of our formative years observing our mother welcoming company into our home on a regular basis.
Mom worked very hard making sure the needs of her family were met. We all remember the cans of cream that were shipped and the dozens of eggs that were sold to provide us necessities. We all remember mom’s huge lush gardens which provided our family with nutritious fresh fruit and vegetables in the summer and canned (and later on) frozen produce for the winter.
We also had many animals on the farm, some for sale and many for food for the family, in particular the chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese.
Mom particularly enjoyed mischievous kids. The grandchildren were never scolded for any of their antics.
Mom was a great organizer and task master. As soon as the children were old enough, we were delegated jobs to keep her brood out of trouble. We also enjoyed fun time. Evenings were spent playing cards, monopoly and such, often with the neighbours.
Mom was a very creative person. Her sewing provided her children, and later on grandchildren, with many creations. There is not a child or grandchild who does not have a shawl, sweater, quilt, blanket or afghan created by grandma to curl up in and expected new born grandchildren always meant new outfits to sew. Mom’s creative juices really flowed when it came to cake decorating - creations which adorned the bridal tables of all her children with one reaching as far as Ottawa for Joe and Judy’s wedding.
Mom was a giving person. Rarely would she arrive for a visit without a cooler full of cabbage from the garden, preserves, loaves or some type of goodie to delight us all.
As the grandchildren grew and we became more involved with their activities, mom and dad had to find some new form of entertainment. Wolseley dam soon became a favorite hangout for the two fishermen. They continued this activity after they moved to Glenavon with the Alameda Dam as their new spot. They also enjoyed going for a drive to enjoy the countryside. During these tours they would explore the eating establishments in whatever area they were in.
Mom was a frugal person, in her early years by necessity, and later by habit. We all will remember many of grandma’s bargains.
The last few years had many difficult times for mom, her failing sight prevented her from doing the things she so enjoyed. Her gradual memory loss eventually prevented her from continuing to cook. When it became necessary to place mom in Long Term Care, she was angry and frustrated. All she wanted to do was “go home”.
I can always remember mom’s devotion to Mary and the rosary. This continued to the end. Her rosary was a constant companion and she was able to recite this prayer as late as Easter weekend.
We know that mom is now in God’s love and care, folded in his arms and held close, loved as his own. She is at home and at peace.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her one sister, Regeena Rogers as well as her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
