It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Danny Clayton McKay from Kahkewistahaw First Nation on December 19, 2024. Danny was born on February 16, 1963 in Taber, Alberta. Danny was raised by his parents John and Christine McKay and was a sibling to Ron (Bonnie) Janice (Zack), Lance (Bonnie) Lisa, Bernie, and Candace.
Danny excelled at sports and over the years raised up the ranks in hockey as he played all over Alberta. As an adult he was an admired and valued coach to the Ochapowace Sr Thunder, Lebret Eagles, Yorkton Terriers, OCN Blizzard, Swift Current Broncos and the LaRonge Ice Wolves.
Danny’s love of sports did not end with hockey, the families return to Kahkewistahaw as a teenager fostered a skill as a bull rider winning many rodeos with a fearless attitude. Danny was a natural athlete and his love for sport was reflected in a life dedicated to teaching the basic skills of hockey
with a great focus on sportsmanship, commitment and tenacity for the sport. Danny’s love of the game is reflected in all the eager faces of the children and adults that benefited from his knowledge and love of the game.
A man of many talents, Danny enjoyed working his farmland, raising cattle, maintaining a beautiful yard, and huge garden. Danny was a talented welder and fabricated practical repairs and innovative designs to support the farm. He was a capable operator of heavy equipment and had many practical talents! If something needed to be done, Danny would find a way to do it.
Danny met the love of his life and wed in 1999. Joni and Danny shared a love that conquered all, together they shared over 25 years. Danny loved Dalton like his own son and over the years they shared many special memories and the birth of Lenix gave Danny a renewed look on life.
The unconditional love shared between Danny and Joni got them through many difficult times as they faced Danny’s medical journey together, they battled through life with a positive attitude and found joy in
making memories with family and friends.
Danny had a very special relationship with two special girls Cassandra and Jaymie, his granddaughter Neka and his pride and joy Lenix and will be forever missed by them.
Danny was an independent thinker, choosing his own path in life, living life on his own terms. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Danny was preceded by his father John McKay; his son Jordan McKay and his sister Candace McKay.
He is survived by his loving wife Joni of 25 years; his daughter Macy; granddaughter Neka and son Dalton (Victoria, Roxy, Andre and Lenix), siblings Ron (Bonnie) and children, Janice (Zack) and children, Lance (Bonnie) and children, Lisa, Bernie and children.
We welcome you to gather at the Chief Denton George Memorial Multiplex, Ochapowace First Nation on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Knowledge Keeper Winston Bear, to celebrate Danny's life with a meal and fellowship to follow.
TILL WE MEET AGAIN
