A beloved husband, father and grandfather, LeRoy enjoyed 83 years full of music, laughter, and love. Born on January 10, 1938 in Brooks, MN, LeRoy spent his adolescence in Hibbing, MN and was a graduate of Assumption Hall Elementary, Hibbing High School and Hibbing Junior College before moving to Cottage Grove, MN to work a 40-year career at the Minnesota Highway Department (now MNDOT).
LeRoy was a lifelong musician, singer, and songwriter. He was proud to be half of what the Hibbing Daily Tribune deemed the “Sweethearts of Song” along with his wife of 60 years, Sharon (Margo) Vague. He shared his musical talents with people all around Minnesota, including at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in South Minneapolis, where he served as the music director for 22 years.
A man of many talents, LeRoy’s wit and creativity was unmatched – even winning him the naming rights to the popular “Kingston Park” off Jamacia Ave. in Cottage Grove. In his younger days, he was an accomplished curler and was on the 1962 St. Paul team that defeated the world-champions in Hibbing’s “Last Chance” bonspiel. After serving 6 months active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he continued to serve 5.5 years reserve duty at Fort Snelling and camps around the Midwest. Later in life, at the age of 40, he began running marathons, and finished 10 before hanging up his running shoes to enjoy more leisurely walks with Sharon.
LeRoy is survived by his wife, Sharon (Margo) Vague; children, Lisa Vague (Boyd Barrott), Lee (Nancy) Vague, and Stephanie (Guillaume) Mounier; grandchildren: Malory (Chris) Van Guilder, Grant Vague, Lucien Mounier, and Rose Mounier; and sister, Grace Lineham. He was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Anna Vague; four brothers; and four sisters.
A celebration of life will take place at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church (4537 3rd Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55419) on November 12, 2021 at 11 a.m. Masks will be required. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in LeRoy’s honor to Secondhand Hounds.
