Michael (Mike) passed away at home, surrounded by the ones he loved the most in his last days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lorraine Spores. He is survived by his son Michael, daughter-in-law Hong, grandson Owen, former wife Linda, and siblings Jeff and Karen.
Mike was born in Saint Paul, MN, and had a tough childhood that shaped his resilience and determination. From a young age, he worked hard—shining shoes as a boy and later pouring cement alongside his father and brother. He eventually built a career as a pipe insulator, a trade he worked in until his diagnosis of bile duct cancer in 1999. Despite a grim prognosis, Mike faced the disease with courage, undergoing the Whipple surgery and radiation treatments that allowed him over 25 more years with family and friends.
He spent many winters in Mazatlán with Linda. He also enjoyed travels to Costa Rica and Brazil, often reminiscing about those adventures. He enjoyed lifting weights through much of his life, and this strength and discipline served him well through numerous health battles. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Mike loved to laugh—even at himself.
He cherished decades living on Centerville Lake, fishing from his pontoon with family and friends. Later, he moved to Woodbury to be closer to loved ones and eventually to Legends of Woodbury Senior Living. Reluctant at first for this move, he ended up making many friends and connections, forming a vibrant social circle. His final request was to be in the comfort of his home. His son never leaving his side. He found his peace and even from his hospice bed exclaimed, “I’m the luckiest man alive; I have it all.”
Mike was deeply proud of his family, especially his grandson, and boasted about them often. He spoke with his son almost daily and was not only a father, but a best friend to him. He treated his daughter-in-law like a daughter and was a loyal friend to many, including Joe Bacon and John Antl. His love, generosity, and humor will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held at Wulff Woodbury Funeral Home on January 25, 2026, from 2–5 PM. A private celebration will be held for his friends at the Legends. His burial ceremony will follow at a later date.
