W. Peter Vander Hook passed away on April 30, 2023, at the age of 74. He was born on November 25, 1948, in Paterson, New Jersey, to John and Mabel Vander Hook and was raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey. He married Sue Mayfield on April 20, 1971.
He dedicated his life to serving God and sharing the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Miami Bible College and later his Master’s in Ministry Studies from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout his life, he served as a pastor at several churches, including Brunswick Community Church in Trivoli, Illinois; Oregon Bible Church in Oregon, Wisconsin; Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Madison, Wisconsin; and the Evangelical Free Church of Mankato, in Minnesota. He also served as youth pastor at Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. After Pete retired, the best part of his day was working at New Life Academy in Woodbury, Minnesota, with the elementary school children.
Pete’s greatest joy in life was his own children—Joshua David Vander Hook (wife Christine Mages Vander Hook); Jared Daniel Vander Hook (partner Alex Elizabeth); Jalene Danielle Vander Hook (partner dog Piper); and Mykaela Joy Denise Townsend (husband Dakota Townsend). His five grandchildren were the loves of his life: Conner Vander Hook, Adrian and Raiden Townsend, and Ada and Noa Vander Hook. Nightly, he prayed individually by name for each of his children, their partners, and his grandchildren. He loved all of them so much!
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mabel Vander Hook, and his sister, Jean Nichols. He is survived by his brothers, Warren Vander Hook (partner Kathy Fitzgerald) and Brian Vander Hook.
Pete had an unwavering love for Jesus and didn’t hesitate to share the good news of salvation with whoever he met. Many of those people gave their lives to Christ as a result. He could talk to anyone, even a stranger on the street, and end up friends with them. His daily routine in retirement included walking his dog, Poppy, having a breakfast fit for a king, watching the students play at New Life Academy, going to the YMCA for his rather strenuous workout, coming home to read a book (many each month), and enjoying dinner with his wife, Sue. Pete also lived a life of spontaneous adventure, taking long road trips with his family to the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Coast, and more.
Pete is now in heaven, singing praises with his Lord and Savior. His life was a testament to his faith and commitment to serving others. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love and service will live on through the many lives he touched during his time on earth.
A Celebration of Life for Pete will be held Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10:00 AM at New Life Church of Woodbury, 6758 Bailey Road, Woodbury, Minnesota 55129. The event will be livestreamed at:
