Andre Elie Joanlanne, affectionately known as Dédé, Chef, and Pappy, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Born in the village of Vignes in the south of France, Andre brought the warmth and richness of his French heritage to everything he touched—especially his food.
A proud resident of Astoria, Queens since 1963, Andre made his mark on New York City’s culinary scene as Executive Chef at the celebrated La Grenouille and the prestigious Union League Club. With a signature smile and a humble heart, he cooked for dignitaries and celebrities alike, yet it was in his own kitchen—surrounded by family—where he was happiest.
He was married to his beloved wife, Marie-Louise, for nearly 66 years. Their marriage was a true partnership built on love, laughter, and devotion—a foundation for the generations that followed.
Andre was a devoted father to his sons Michael, married to Joyce, and Francis, and his partner Adelina. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Christopher, married to Maddie; Jessica, married to Peter; Andrea and her partner Joe; Alyssa; Nathalie, married to Grant; and Nicole. He cherished every moment spent with them, and especially loved playing with his great-grandchildren Luke, Odette, Jack, and Max.
Andre also loved to ski with his friends, his sons, and his grandchildren—especially treasuring days out on the slopes with Christopher.
He had a special place in his heart for the many pets that were part of the family over the years—each one a companion he adored and treated with gentleness and affection.
Andre’s kindness, generosity, and quick wit were as unforgettable as the meals he prepared. He was always ready with a clever remark or a good joke—often followed by that unmistakable twinkle in his eye that meant you’d better be ready to laugh.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and exquisite cuisine—a life well-lived, a family well-fed, and memories that will linger like the aroma of a favorite meal.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
