Esmilda Avila was 101 years old when she passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 28, 2021. She was born in Vergara, Colombia on November 9, 1919. She immigrated to America in October of 1963. She loved being in this country.
Esmilda is survived by her daughter Teresa and her two granddaughters: Patti and her husband Rudy Garcia, Claudia “Caya” and her husband Billy Barazotti, and her beloved great grandchildren Alex, Adrianna, Sabrina, Nicholas, Andrew and Daniella.
Besides raising her granddaughters, she was a caregiver to many in the neighborhood providing comfort through her warm smile and incredible cooking, especially her arepas. Not only did her family call her abuela but many who knew her considered her their abuela too.
One of Esmilda’s passions was her love of animals. Throughout her life she cared for birds, various dogs, cats and even a chicken… in Elmhurst, New York.
Above all, Abuela’s greatest love was her family, her granddaughters, and her six great-grandchildren.
