

Hortense is predeceased by her sister Ella Campbell, brother George Johnson, and nephew William Atkinson.
Hortense is survived by her loving husband of 57 years Booker Pressey. They were married in Arlington, VA on June 10th, 1957.
Hortense is lovingly remembered by her three sons, Roy, George, and Charles as well as daughters in-law Carol and Eileen; four grandchildren; Desmond, Darren, Noelle, and Nigel; and older sister, Audrey Johnson. Also surviving is her sister in-law Barbara Pleasant, brothers in-law David (Leah) and Kenneth (Marjorie), and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Hortense was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 28 1925, to beloved parents, William A. Johnson and Essie E. Johnson (Jones). She graduated from Girl’s High School in Brooklyn. She worked in Gimbles Department Store, and then at the New York Telephone Company for over 10 years, where she became a Department Supervisor. Hortense and Booker moved to Long Island City, Queens in 1961.
Hortense was deeply involved in her community. For several years, she directed Jacob Riis Community Center’s “After School Homework” programs and Summer Day Camps, where she provided ongoing guidance and support to so many of her community’s youth.
She belonged to the Mother’s Club, Queen’s Democratic Club, and always volunteered for local fund raising activities like bazaars, bake sales, & clothing drives.
Hortense also enjoyed drawing, sewing, and was an avid reader of mystery novels.
She will be sorely missed by all.
