My children and I met Joe and had him consistently in our lives 9 months before he unfortunately passed away. Joe agreed to tutor my children. It was such a blessing to have him as a tutor. He was more than just a tutor. He became part of out family. He was such a great help to me in regards to parenting skills and supporting me in doing the best for my children. I will miss him so much, I can't even describe what a loss it is not to have him in our lives anymore. He was such a wonderful person, he had such a positive influence in my children's lives, he was so giving, so caring... He will be so very missed. I am so devastated by loosing him it is just unbearable.  Rest in peace Joe, and thank you so much for being there for us, and taking care of us.

We met Joe late in life and only got to know him for a few years, but he was a great guy. He could give it out and he could take it so horsing around with him was always fun. Deepest condolences to Diane.

I first met Joe when he lived with mutual friends in Rosedale at the house we all called, "The Ranch." Many parties were held and good times were had there. Even then, Joe was a larger than life figure.  We all went on in our lives to marriages and careers, and I didn't see Joe again until last year when he  came to a meeting at the school where I work in Queens. I recognized him first--how could I not? His larger than life appearance, his fun, joking, self-effacing manner, his references to Columbia and football. I thought, "Oh, that is Joe Tuths! " He didn't recognize me at first, many years having passed, but when he did, he gave me such a warm hug that it brought me back to the "old days" in an instant.  I saw him a few times at school after that and he told me several times that he would like me to meet his wife. The few times I saw him after our first meeting we reminisced, and each time he gave me the same big, warm hug. It was just so good to see him show up in my school and add a smile to my day. Diane, I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you, and I am so very sorry for your loss. I'd like to express my heartfelt condolences to you and all of your family.

Joe Tuths and I met while playing basketball for Our Lady of Lourdes in the 6th grade. That was 1956.  For anyone who might be counting, that was 58 years ago!  We progressed from there to the Davison Ave school gym to his back yard to the Malverne HS gym. He moved on to Columbia and, after my stint in Naval Aviation, I went to St John's. During that time we teamed up again playing in the Long Island CYO basketball league. They didn't know what hit them! Joe was a 6'1” power forward whose shot no one could touch. He had arms that reflected his pro football career and a butt like Charles Barkley's. As mild mannered as he was off the court, he was just the opposite on the court. A very competitive guy! Once, after I didn't pass him the ball after a couple of possessions, he wound up and threw the ball at my head. Fortunately, I was able to catch his “pass” and threw it right back at him, where it caromed out of bounds. And this was during a league game!! The rest of the team looked at us incredulously. They just didn't understand. I tell this story because it is a small glimpse of the relationship that Joe and I had. Both competitive, and both loving what the other guy bought to the table, or the court, for that matter. We became roommates with my brother Donald, and Joe Panzarella at “The Ranch”, as Joe's mother aptly named our humble abode in Rosedale with the electrified and green slimed pool in the back yard. Joe was teaching and pursuing  2 Masters degrees at the same time. For one, he had to drive to Boston 2-3 times a week. Those years at The Ranch solidified our adult relationship, although we rarely acted as adults during that time. Strange how that works! We had a lot of fun!
We moved the party to California where he came up with the quote, “what's wrong with California Is the Californians”.  I eventually met my wife there, but Joe had to move back to NY to find the woman he loved, Diane, about whom, in all their years together, I never heard him say even the slightest negative thing. Diane, you were truly the love of his life!
 I could go on telling stories of some of the adventures and laughs we had, and there were many, but that will have to come at another time.  
In the last few years, he was not well. It started with the cancer scare about nine years ago. He beat the hell out of that! When he contracted rheumatoid Arthritis, his life became very uncomfortable. Not only was he in pain, but his basketball and tennis became limited. We talked a lot on the phone. The last time was about a week before he passed. As usual, he hardly mentioned that he was sicker than he had been. He just said that he hadn't been feeling so well. Our conversation continued about the usual thoughts that we shared, basketball and football. I was shocked when Diane told me he passed. And the story of him coming back from the dead 2 times while in her arms, will forever add to his legacy and my memories of this great man.
Joe was an intelligent, loyal, caring, loving, introspective bear of a man. I loved him. I already miss him!

Diane, Marie and family,

I am so blessed to have been able to see Joey a couple of years ago at Chris'   I was so excited to see my godfather who was always larger than life to me.  After leaving NY, we certainly didn't have many opportunities to visit.  Every time I did see Joey, he would make me laugh, say a kind word that would always stay with me and, of course, give me a huge hug.  I'm so sorry he has left so soon but so grateful he and Diane joined us for Dad's birthday. May your memories fill your heart and give you joy and comfort.  You are all in my prayers.  Love you.

The world lost a great guy. He was such a friendly, happy neighbor and I'm glad I had the chance to know him.  I am truly sorry that I won't see or hear his booming happy voice anymore.  My condolences to Diane.  He adored you.  You could see it in his every action.  May he rest in peace and Diane, hopefully your memories will help you through this difficult time.

Joe was a dear friend, always ready with a laugh and a good story. When the sun is shining and the air is warm, we will know that Joe is here, hanging out at the beach loved so much.  We will miss him, but we will never forget him. Diane, our thoughts are with you.

RIP Joe      You were a wonderful man here on earth.   You are most probably making everyone smile and laugh in heaven.   We really lost someone special.  I miss your hugs we really got closer in the last couple of years. We were able to talk about illness not being morbid.  But  we really understood each other. we were both able to feel good about the time we had.  Now with your passing I am so sad that God took someone with so much love to give.  I have seen it with everyone you touched.  The love in your eyes for your beloved Diane was unremarkable.  The love you had for each other could be seen for miles around.  It was such a strong love. Please Diane always remember that.   Diane you were so lucky being married to a great man.   In the time ahead while you are really grieving the loss of your beloved Joe.  I am always around to lend an ear, a shoulder to cry on.   Please let me also help you through this tome if you need it.   Love always   xxoo Monica

Marie and family, so sad to lose Joe yet so glad we got to see him a couple of years ago at Chris'.  Was like "old times". Besides Joey's wonderful heart, one thing I counted on was a great hug from him @Nanny's/Uncle Joe/Aunt Lydia's. You knew it was warm, sincere and said, "family". Glad to have had another not long ago.

I met Joe the summer of 1996 when I joined old blue as a player. He had a warm smile and kind words every time I saw him. He was very encouraging and helped keep me motivated. He loved the old blue and the old blue loves him. Over the years although many years apart in age I developed a very warm friendship with Joe and looked forward to every time I could see him at an old blue event. I am sad to hear of his loss but I am glad That I become his friend over the years. My condolences to his family a man like Joe is one of a kind.

Always positive, upbeat and smiling.  He was a wonderful friend.  I will miss him.  You are in my thoughts and prayers, my friend.  Heartfelt condolences to you, Diane.  He is smiling down on all of us.

Every memory I have of Joe he is laughing and smiling. The world needs more people like him. He will be missed by many. Diane, I am so very sorry for your loss. You and the rest of Joe's family are in our thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with Diane during this time. May her memories of the good man Joe was embrace her like a warm blanket, and may her pain be diminished each day by knowing that one day she will be reunited in Heaven with her soul mate.
