Lilia Moreno passed away on December 16, 2011; she was 85 years old. Lilia was born in Bogota, Colombia, and was the oldest of 8 children. She immigrated to New York in the 1960s with her husband, Rafael, and their three children – Fernando, Marta and Michael. She was a resident of Jackson Heights for more than 40 years.
Lilia loved life and her warmth and caring left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Not only did she raise her three children, but she also cared for her five grandchildren. Much of her life was sacrificed for and lived through them.
Among the many things that Lilia enjoyed were sports – tennis and soccer were her favorites, needlework, travel and music. It has been said that she had the voice of angel.
Lilia is survived by Rafael Moreno, her husband of 63 years; her children and their spouses: Fernando & Margaret, Marta & Bruce, Michael, and Helga; her five grandchildren: Ron, Julie, Michelle, Daniel and Katrina; her three great-grandchildren: Zoe, August Brasco and Olivia; and her siblings: Maria Luisa, Maria Isabel and Rafael. Lilia will forever be remembered by a huge extended family of which she was the matriarch.
Lilia lived and struggled with lung disease for most of her life. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Lung Association, http://www.lungusa.org/donate/memorial-honor-gifts/.
