He served in the United States Army after being drafted at an early age. He worked as a welder for Mint Brothers in Long Island City for over 25 years as well as the government on special assignments traveling around the world.
Raymond loved to play cards and sit outside with his buddies. If he wasn't at home, you knew you could find him in the park. "Ray" (as most knew him) always said something to make you laugh. He was a "smooth" man with his collared shirts buttoned to the top and his "Ray" belt. His quote was "Hey Darling" and he had a memorable smile. Ray was a gentleman, it took a lot to make him angry, which you never saw. He leaves to mourn his three sisters, Mary Williams of Philadelphia, PA, Katherine Brown of Belmar, NJ and Ethel Simmons of Augusta, GA; his children, Bettye, Geraldine, Charles, Bernadette, Gregory and Janet; he was preceded in death by his son Edward; his grandchildren, Flaceia, Michelle, Stephen,Jr., Samantha, Corinne, Janine, Matthew, Devon, Edward, Jr. and Greg, Jr.; his twelve great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, his loving aunt Ethel Gardner, goddaughter Phyllis, cousin Bubba Gary and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
