Winnie (Winifred Coyne) hails from Shanvallycahil Tourmakeady Co. Mayo. She is survived by her sister Kate Joyce in London and predeceased by sisters Mary Grimes, Beatrice Murray, Nora McCaffrey and brothers Michael, Patrick, John and Martin Coyne.
She immigrated to New York in 1938. Over the years she had become a "Matriarch of the Coyne Clan" as she was the eldest surviving "Auntie" to many. As a Great, Great, Great Auntie she was aunt to four generations of nieces and nephews.
Winnie was so full of life and throughout her life she found many opportunities to help others. She was independent in spirit even to having elective hip surgery at 89, because she wanted to remain drug free for the rest of her life. After the surgery at 89, she moved to Woodside, where her first task was to join St. Sebastian's Parish. It was heartbreaking for her to leave behind St. Joseph's and Most Precious Blood, but they were to far for her to travel. Winnie was a devoted Catholic and loved God and Church.
She was an active member of various organizations including the Mayo Ladies Association, Female order of Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society and others.
She has the good fortune to make many trips home to her beloved Ireland as well as trips to the Holy land, Fatima and Lourdes.
In the last few years her health began to fail and also her independence. It was so appropriate for her to pass on the feast of Our Lady's Assumption into heaven as she had such a great devotion to her. Her passing is a blessing for her.
She will be missed.
