Grace Marie McCormick was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. While we are saddened to announce her death on August 8, 2021, we are finding peace in knowing that she is no longer on the journey of Alzheimer’s disease.
Grace was born to James J. & Anna M. Johnston on August 14, 1940 in New York. Grace was the youngest of 3 girls, Anne, Jane, & Grace. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Anne, and her son Danny.
Grace is survived by her husband of 58 years, Kevin McCormick. Grace knew Kevin McCormick from a young age. They were kids growing up in New York City during the 50’s. The stories they have shared of their young years in the Bronx are like a movie! After high school, Grace worked as a secretary at Price Waterhouse and then at the New York Central Railroad. During this time she was also introduced to volunteer work. She was a volunteer at The Foundling in Manhattan. Grace & Kevin married at St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Bronx, NY on February 23, 1963. In April of 1964, they welcomed their first child, Daniel Patrick (April 1964-October 2020). In 1965 they welcomed Suzanne Marie. In 1967, they welcomed MaryKate. And completing the family came Jennifer Anne in 1970. Grace always wanted to have children and be a mother. While the kids were in school, Grace earned her associates degree in Interior Design. She also logged thousands of hours as a volunteer at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. After raising her children, Grace enjoyed her years of work at California State University, Fullerton.
Growing up as a city kid from the Bronx, Kevin had always wanted to travel. Grace was by his side through all of the vacations, cross country trips, and business moves. She had no idea what adventures she was in for but she always went along for the ride!! The family visited many national parks, and spent summers and winters in Lake Tahoe. Grace & Kevin traveled abroad to many countries and enjoyed an occasional cruise. Later in life they found such joy while living in Whitefish, Montana. While there, Grace continued her volunteer work. She was one of the original members of the Whitefish Walkers, delivered Meals on Wheels, brought the Holy Eucharist to the homebound, and even got Kevin to join her in volunteering at Glacier National Park counting Loons! They moved to the Bay Area in 2010 and were very happy to be near to Danny, Katie, Suzanne, Jennifer, Trey, and a slew of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grace and Kevin moved to Georgia in 2019 and now had the opportunity to be near MaryKate, Steve, and their family.
We are forever grateful for the community and memory care that was provided to Grace at Camellia Place in Woodstock, Georgia. Services will be held in New York in September. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement in memory of Grace McCormick.
