Irene went to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on April 4, 2026. Irene was born January 8, 1922. She has been an undeniable blessing to her four daughters, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, fourteen great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild. Irene outlived her parents, six of her siblings, her husband, two daughters and two grandsons. She leaves behind five generations of people whom she’s loved and that loved her dearly.
Irene was devotedly and joyfully cared for by her daughter Victoria Glance for the last fourteen years. Many times when friends and family would call or visit the two of them could be heard laughing and singing together. Irene was quick witted, smart and often swooned over her favorite movie actor, Glenn Ford, who could, as she said, “put his shoes under my bed anytime”. There were many other “Ireneisms” as they were lovingly named by the nurses that took great care of her.
I have had the utmost joy of being Irene’s granddaughter and share many memories along with my sisters, cousins, children, nephews and niece that will be passed on to each generation. Stories of how she lived through The Great Depression, WWII, reciting poems she learned as a child in school, and the many songs she would affectionately sing to us. I will tell my grandchildren she used to work for McDonald’s and often played the role of the Hamburglar at events. I will tell them that an eggplant is called a mule’s egg and chocolate jimmies are called mice turds. I will tell them that Grandma would smile and say that Scott cheats when they play games and that she loved playing with him. I will tell them how she used to quote Christie and say, “I love you so much it makes my bum tight”. I will tell them how she adopted Tricia’s version of the birthday song adding the verse, “May you live a hundred years”. I will scratch their backs and play with their hair while sharing these stories and love them endlessly just like my Grandma did. She was the best example of unconditional and sacrificial love.
I am thinking now about her entrance into Heaven, seeing all those she loved that went before her and her sister Ruth greeting her with open arms while the two of them laugh together once again, because Heaven just got a bit more joyful with Grandma being there now.
I love you Grandma, a bushel and a peck.
A Graveside Service will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park, 120 Memorial Dr, Canton, GA 30114, US, on April 9, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
