October 15, 1953 – May 1, 2022
James “Jim” Madison McFerrin III died peacefully with his family by his side on May 1, 2022, following a courageous ten-month battle with Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Jim was born on October 15, 1953, in Macon, GA to James McFerrin Jr. and Margaret McFerrin. As a young child, his family moved to Birmingham, AL where he first developed his love for sports, particularly baseball.
Jim attended high school at Berry Academy in Rome, GA. He would go on to attend Berry College earning a bachelor’s degree in business and completing his MBA. At Berry College, Jim enjoyed intramural softball and played tennis, a love that would follow him the rest of his life. He made lifelong friends and met Stephanie, his future wife. The two married at Frost Chapel on Berry’s campus.
Jim went on to have a successful career in the banking and mortgage industries, however his true life’s calling was being a dad. A proud father to three children, Ryan, Michelle, and Meghan, Jim was very active in each of their lives. He loved being a part of their activities and holds an unconfirmed world record for most consecutive baseball and softball games, cheerleading events, and swim meets attended. He simply never missed a moment.
Even into adulthood, Jim’s children knew he was always just a phone call or short drive away, eager to provide support, love, and to cheer them on in all their personal and professional endeavors. When Ryan, Michelle, and Meghan met their spouses, he welcomed them like they were his own children, delighting in the additions to his family. In recent years, Jim was elated with his new role as a grandfather (lovingly known as GP or “Beep Beep”) to his four young grandchildren. Jack (3), Samantha (3), Hudson (1), and Sophie (1) brought him incredible joy.
From sports to cultural events, Jim had a wide variety of interests. When he wasn’t at the tennis courts, Jim could be found tackling a project. Where others might call a handyman, Jim embraced the challenge and took pride in learning new skills. He grew to love the arts, enjoyed exploring museums, and was especially proud of Meghan’s pottery. Stephanie’s New Jersey influences transformed him into a Jersey boy at heart with a love of Frankie Valli in addition to his passion for James Taylor, Carole King, and Billy Joel. Jim became a proud fan of his children’s schools and delighted in spending time at both the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. He rarely missed watching the Atlanta Braves and regularly attended games at Turner Field and Truist Park.
Jim and his family were fortunate to live in wonderful neighborhoods throughout the years. First, in Marietta, GA and the past 24 years in Woodstock, GA. It was in Woodstock where Jim affectionately became known as “the Mayor” among his friends and community. He could be found many nights and weekends at the Towne Lake Hills tennis courts where he served as the head of the tennis committee. He loved meeting people, connecting friends, and was masterful at finding common ground. Known for his trademark kindness, helpful nature, and gentle blue eyes, Jim was a friend to all.
Jim leaves behind a wonderful legacy in his children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, and the many people he touched with his kindness. He will be deeply missed.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Stephanie; son Ryan McFerrin (Betsy); daughters Michelle Pyne (Bryan) and Meghan McFerrin (James Gilliland); grandchildren Jack, Samantha, Hudson, and Sophie; sister Fontaine Souther (Sam); brothers Craige McFerrin (Diane) and William McFerrin (Lynn); and devoted grand-dog Maddux.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 11, 2022, at 2pm at Hillside United Methodist Church in Woodstock, GA. A reception celebrating Jim’s life will be held immediately following the service at The Tavern at Towne Lake.
