John was born to the late John Summerfield Johnson and Betty Ruth (Maddox) Barnes.
In 1972, he married the love of his life, Betty Sue. The two shared forty-six years of partnership built on loyalty, humor, and quiet devotion. Their love story began over a piece of hot fudge cake at Shoney’s — a small moment that turned into a lifetime together.
Mom was the light and color of our world.
Dad was her strength and foundation—everything he was came from loving her.
Not only are we losing him, but it feels like losing the last echo of her.
But we know he’s finally at peace, back with the woman he spent his life loving.
John served his country honorably in the United States Army. He later found joy in simple, steady routines — fishing, target shooting, spending time outdoors, and taking comfort in the peaceful familiarities of home.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue, and his parents.
Survivors include his daughter, Tonya (Brad) Phillips of Hiram, GA; his step-daughter, Debbie (Andy) Kendrick of Bella Vista, AR; grandchildren Andrew Kendrick and Jennifer (Jeremy) Ellis; along with extended family and friends who will miss him deeply.
