L J Grant of Marietta, Georgia, age 78, died Friday, January 15, of Covid-19. L J grew up on a hundred acre farm in Kensington, in Northwest Georgia. While he enjoyed helping his dad in the summertime getting up hay, he loved most hearing the tales told by his father while helping him with his sawmill operation.
Upon graduation in 1961 from Chattanooga Valley High School L J went into the United States Army. He served in the artillery and was stationed most of the time in Alaska, a source of many great stories he shared with family and friends.
Upon his return from the Army L J married his high school sweetheart, Daffron Eaves. They never spent more than five days apart in their 56 years of marriage. He began working for Gulf Oil Corporation in 1965 and retired from BP Oil after nearly 40 years driving oil tankers.
In addition to his wife Daffron, L J is survived by his daughter Rebecca (Casey) Tucker, a teacher at Cass High School in White, Georgia; daughter Emilie (Steve) Mooney, bookkeeper and secretary to the principal of Little Mill Middle School in Cumming, Georgia; and Raymond Grant with Highlight Technology of Sandy Springs, Georgia. He cherished and did all he could to encourage his five grandchildren, Colton and Natalie Tucker, Vada and Clara Mooney, and Brady Marshal Grant.
L J was a life-long sportsman. He was captain of his high school football team, coached his children’s soccer teams, and played Senior League softball at Cherokee County’s Hobgood Park for over 20 years. At times he played on three teams in one season. He loved traveling to the many tournaments his teams participated in and treasured the friendships he cultivated in the sport.
Due to the current health restrictions, no public services are planned. Arrangements are being handled by Woodstock Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any of the following: Flintstone Baptist Church, Flintstone, Georgia 30075; Salem Baptist Church, Gainesville, Georgia 30506; or Cass High School Biology Department, White, Georgia 30184.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital for their valiant efforts to keep L J with us. Unfortunately the virus damaged his lungs so quickly L J was unable to overcome its debilitating effects.
L J’s family takes great comfort in the kind words of family member Deborah Keith who reminded us that L J has been welcomed with open arms at the gates of heaven by his beloved father-in-law, Arnold Eaves, who introduced him to the existence that knows no pain.
