On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, Mirta Quintana, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away in her home at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family. Mirta was born on January 3, 1935, in Havana, Cuba. She was raised by her father, Colonel Manuel Alvarez Margolles, a Freedom Fighter in Cuba, and her mother, Aida Dominguez Robaina. After years of political unrest, Mirta and several of her family members fled Cuba for the United States. Sometime later, after his return to Cuba, her father was executed for his efforts in fighting communism. On June 18, 1955, she married Louis Quintana and they raised a son and two daughters, in Florida. They spent their final years in Woodstock, Georgia near their daughters.
Mirta’s passions included sewing, cooking, raising German Shepherds and political activism. She became an American citizen on March 16, 1959, an honor which she held in great esteem. She took immense pride in caring for her family and she was known for her topnotch Cuban cooking. Her fierceness of heart and unwavering bravery, no matter the circumstances, will always be revered.
Mirta is survived by her sister, Aida Rodriguez, of Worcester, Massachusetts, her three children, Louis M. Quintana and his wife, Sara Osofsky, of Wilmington, NC, Susan C. Hopson and her husband, Tom Hopson, Jr, of Woodstock, GA, and Doris H. Quintana of Marietta, GA, along with her 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren who all adored her.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the Woodstock Funeral Home on Main Street at 11:00 a.m., immediately following the visitation at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband of 64 years.
