

He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on July 7, 1933 and grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida. He attended the University of Tennessee and Georgia State University, and completed the Executive Training program at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Tom began his career with Ivan Allen Company as an office supply salesman in 1956. He held several management positions in his 39 year career with Ivan Allen and retired as President and CEO in 1995. He was a member of the Atlanta Rotary Club and the Capital City Club. He was also an active mentor for the Boys Scouts of America.
After retirement, he and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Big Canoe, Georgia. He was active in the Big Canoe Chapel, serving on the Board of Trustees five years and holding the office of Chairman. He was a charter member of the Big Canoe Writer’s Club, the Big Canoe Fly Fishers, and the Big Canoe Genealogy Club. He wrote several historical novels and short stories. He and Marilyn were also volunteers for Big Canoe Animal Rescue and Labrador Friends of the South. Tom was an avid outdoorsman and fly-fisher who tied many of his own flies. While living at Big Canoe, he taught classes on the basics of fly fishing. He also enjoyed salt water fishing and was a member of the Homosassa Fishing Club. In 2006, he and Marilyn moved to Woodstock, Georgia and they were members of Little River Methodist Church.
Tom is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Barrows Bolton; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Rick Carpenter of Woodstock; granddaughter, Lindsay Orr and her husband, Scott, of Denver, Colorado; grandsons, Kent Carpenter Dunwoody, Georgia and Brewer Carpenter of Greenville, South Carolina.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, February 7, 2013 in the Chapel of Woodstock Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Bolton officiating. Inurnment will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Woodstock Funeral Home.
