Charlotte Mae (Gregg) Bendure, 99 passed away on July 23, 2022 with her loving family by her side. Charlotte was born on January 18, 1923 in Centralia, IL to Emory and Gwendolyn (Barnes) Gregg. After high school, Charlotte served in the US Navy during World War II, before marrying R.T. “Ted” Bendure Jr.
Charlotte is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ted, her uncle and aunt Ted and Mary Gregg, aunt and uncle Doris and Joseph Burns, cousins Maureen Burns Laugherty, Elaine Walker, and Eleanor Harper.
From Charlotte’s Family…
Mom was so very proud of her service to our country during World War II as a Navy Wave. She was stationed in Washington DC with the rank of Specialist Q. She was assigned to a division charged with tracking German U-boats. Her work was so secret she would never discuss it with anyone, much like her husband Ted, our Dad would never discuss his time and duties as an Army lieutenant stationed in the Philippines during WWII. In the Navy she made life long friends and continued to stay in touch with them throughout her life. She always said she learned to do 2 things in the Navy…smoke cigarettes and drink black coffee…and she did both successfully for the last 78 years!!
She and Dad married and honeymooned in Cincinnati. They took in a minor league hockey game while there. She kept the game program to this day!! She kept a lot of things!! Raising 4 kids, dad’s job as a traveling store fixture representative took them from Worthington, Ohio, to Indianapolis Indiana, to Lebanon, Ohio and then back to Columbus. Dad started the office furniture division of The Wasserstrom Company.
After her youngest child went to school she began selling Avon and Amway (dad said why not sell both while you’re out there!!). Eventually Avon won out and she worked her east side territory for the next 45 years. Her sale achievements and awards were numerous. We always knew at Christmas we’d get great (or interesting) gifts of decanters that were replicas of cars or beer steins or something topical of the times we lived. All filled with colognes and perfumes.
After retirement she continued to live at home. An avid gardener she would take long neighborhood walks and kibitz with friends all along the way.
Eventually we talked her into moving to a condo. This allowed her to be closer to her kids. The last 6 months she moved into an assisted living facility in New Albany. I recently told a staff member that we think she had the best times while there for the last six months compared to the last 5 years. The additional socializing must of reignited her internal people skills. She quickly became a popular resident. She took part in bingo, choir, happy hour along with breakfast (sometimes), lunch, and dinner!
She was part of the greatest generation. We know she was the greatest mother we could have. Rest In Peace, we love you mom!
