Larry Gooden, age 67, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2023. He was born October 26, 1955, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Charlie and Mae Ruth Gooden. Larry is survived by his brother Charlie (Yvonne), his sister Joyce, his former wife Mary, his daughters Kellee and Laurie, his grandchildren Scarlett and Elliott, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other dear family and friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters Ora Dean and Gloria, and his grandson Grayson.
He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Hiram College on a wrestling scholarship where he earned his bachelor's degree in computer science. It was during this time that he met and married his (now former) wife Mary. After graduation, Larry and Mary returned to Cleveland and began building their family. Together, they were blessed with two daughters, Kellee and Laurie. Later in life, the Gooden family relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where Larry resided until his passing.
Larry had a zest for life that was truly remarkable. He found joy in a wide array of activities, including fishing, tennis, bowling, art, dancing, running, jazz, photography, and exploring the beauty of nature. He had an infectious smile, boisterous laugh, and an admirable ability to brighten any gathering, always being the life of the party.
Larry's dedication to helping others extended beyond his personal interests. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, providing guidance and support to countless individuals on their journey to recovery. His commitment to sobriety was unwavering, with over 24 years of sobriety at the time of his passing.
While Larry faced his share of challenges, he lived life to the fullest and always appreciated the simple things in life. He was easygoing, jovial, non-judgemental, family oriented, and strong in his convictions. His favorite saying was, "Don't let anybody steal your joy." Our family finds solace in knowing that Larry is finally at peace after his long battle with brain tumors. His memory will forever live on in our hearts, as we celebrate a life that touched so many with love, laughter, and support.
Larry requested a celebration of life be held in his honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. He also requested a cremation and that we scatter his ashes in one of his favorite places, Lake Erie.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday September 30th from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 6699 N. High Street. Please share a memory or send condolences to Larry’s family.
