

Michael Omar Ranney died peacefully at Kobacker House Hospice Care in Columbus Ohio on July 27, 2025. He was preceded in death by his husband, Greg Nutter, his brother, Phillip Ranney, and his parents Omar S. Ranney and Dorothy Mae Ranney.
Michael was born in Lakewood, Ohio on October 14, 1945. He graduated from Lakewood High School and Allegheny College where he received a BA degree. He went on to receive a Master of Public Administration degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
Michael dedicated more than 25 years of his life serving as Chief Executive Officer of the Ohio Psychological Association (OPA) in Columbus, Ohio. An official of OPA stated “His quiet leadership, unwavering commitment to the profession, and gentle strength left a lasting impact on the association and on all who had the privilege of working with him.” The OPA recently established an annual “Michael O. Ranney Servant Leader Award” that “commemorates his enduring legacy”. The citation states that Michael’s career exemplifies “servant leadership through visionary service, tireless advocacy, and deep investment in the growth of others.”
Michael, along with his husband of 30 years Greg, enjoyed life together. They especially shared a love of opera, Golden Retrievers, good food, good wine and each other’s company.
Michael is survived by his brother David Ranney (Patricia Wright), nieces Becki Anders (Wally), Jill Roman Deb Patterson (Bill), and nephew Christopher Ranney (Diana), grand nephew Peter Roman, grand nieces Taylor Ranney, Amber Ranney, Molly Bics, Margaux Patterson.
The lives of Michael and his late husband Greg Nutter will be celebrated at a private memorial to be scheduled in the near future.
