Shirley Anne Schwartz

Shirley Anne Schwartz, born Shirley Anne Butler in Barnesville, OH on September 9, 1935—passed away on December 24, 2022 at age 87 at Dublin Methodist Hospital in Dublin, OH. Shirley was the youngest of five children of Harry and Ada Butler of Bexley, OH.

Shirley grew up on a working farm in Barnesville, OH in Belmont County. Her older brothers and sisters adored their youngest sibling. They took her everywhere on the farm, taught her how to care for the animals, how to plant and care for the crops, how to cook enough food to feed all the farm hands, and instilled in her a lifelong love of the country and all creatures great and small.

When Shirley was in upper elementary school, her family sold the farm and moved to Bexley, OH. After graduating from Bexley High School, Shirley met the love of her life, Walter, while they were both working at the Columbus Dispatch newspaper. Married in 1956, they moved to Worthington, OH in 1957 and welcomed their daughter Carol Anne in 1958. In 1961, son Carl Eric was born.

Shirley was a stay-at-home mom who truly loved creating a happy, loving, nurturing, warm environment for all her family. She was a fabulous baker and cook—always bringing home-made dishes to church/school events, to neighbors, to friends and family. She could sew anything, and used her skills to decorate her home and to create most of her childrens’ everyday clothing…including special dresses for her daughter Carol’s piano recitals and choral ensembles. Shirley loved gardening, and planted many beautiful flower beds in her yard along with veggie gardens. She also adored animals and was often the caretaker of any strays in the neighborhood.

Shirley dearly loved and cherished her family. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her two children: Carol Lang of Columbus, OH (husband John) and Eric Schwartz of Marblehead, MA; as well as grandsons Graham Schwartz (GA) and Ian Schwartz (MN).

The funeral will be a private ceremony with close family members present.
