Sung Ae Harmon

Sung Ae Harmon (née Kang Sung Ae) was born on February 3, 1947 in Jinhae, South Korea, the eldest daughter of Kang Myung Hyuk and Kim Chung Yol. Preceded in death by her parents, survived by her sisters Sung Hwa Fernholz and Seung Jung Tucker and brothers Seung Pyung Kang, Seung Kwang Kang, Seung Man Kang, and Seung Gun Kang. Died March 19, 2025 in Westerville, Ohio, survived by her loving husband, Phillip L. Harmon, her son and daughter-in-law Bryan and Beth Bailey, and her grandchildren Layton Bailey, Maverick Bailey, and Niam Bailey.

Sung Ae was a gifted student and accomplished classical singer in college in South Korea. She lived in Okinawa, San Diego, CA and Annapolis, MD with her first husband, Donald Bailey, and their son, Bryan.

Sung Ae was recognized as a Fine Fragrance Specialist at both Marshall Fields and later at Nordstrom, where she served many loyal customers and friends. Her greatest love was to prepare original Korean cuisine for her family and especially her beloved grandchildren. Sung also greatly enjoyed her membership in the Korean Soh Mang Church of the Nazarene in Westerville under the guidance of Rev. Eun Kim.

Sadly, Sung Ae developed Parkinson's Disease in 2015 and fought it the rest of her life. She became a proud and grateful member of the Perky Parky Gals support group with other ladies dealing with Parkinson's. After undergoing deep brain stimulation surgery (DBS) in 2024, Sung faced several difficult complications from the disease that ultimately led to her passing.

The family and friends of Sung Ae are deeply grateful to the nurses and doctors at OSU Wexner Medical Center, the nurses and doctors at the Palliative Care Center at St. Ann's Hospital, and the nurses, doctors, and staff at Hospice of Central Ohio (HOCO) for their loving and tireless efforts to help her along. For all those facing Parkinson's, just know there are groups like those listed who do amazing things to help this particular community. Always have hope, and always love one another.

키워가기를 바랬다는 뜻이고, 승애의 부모님은 그것을 이뤄냈습니다.

승애는 참된 하나님의 자녀였습니다. 그녀는 만나는 사람마다 하나님의 사랑을 전했습니다.

스스로에게 물어보시길 바랍니다; 승애가 꾸준히 사랑을 보여주었는가? 그렇다면, 그녀가

하나님의 참된 자녀였다는것을 부정할 수 없을것입니다.

많은 사람들이 여쭤봅니다, 승애가 왜 그리고 어떻게 돌아가시게 되었느냐?

말을 이루기 어렵지만 말씀드리려합니다. 그녀는 파킨슨병으로 인해 생긴 근긴장이상으로

인해 더이상 물이나 음료를 삼킬 수 없었기 때문에 세상을 떠났습니다. 그녀는 더이상 균형을

잃지 않고는 서있을수 없는 상태였습니다.

근긴장이상은 특정한 근육이 의도와 무관한 발작을 일으키는것입니다. 이 때문에 시간이

흘러갈수록 승애는 삼키는 동작을 취하는데 쓰이는 목과 후두 쪽의 근육을 더이상 조절 할 수

없었고, 발과 다리 근육의 발작과 쥐 때문에 균형을 잡을 수 없었습니다.

크리스마스 이후로 그녀는 총 6번이나 넘어졌습니다. 6번째 넘어질때는 꼬리뼈가 부러졌구요,

이것을 치료하기 위해 세인트 앤 병원을 찾아갔을때, 병원에선 그녀가 삼키는데 어려움을

겪은것이 흡인성 폐렴또한 불러왔다는것을 알려주었습니다.

이때, 승애는 그녀의 삶이 끝을 향해간다는 것을 마주하기 시작했고, 아주 용감하고 담대하게

스스로에게 무슨 큰 일이 생긴다면 그저 보내주기를 바라기 시작했습니다. 자신의 임종 소망을

모든 의료 옵션을 사용하는 'Full Code'에서 부활이 아닌 편안한 치료만 하는것으로 바꿨습니다.

그녀가 중요한 단계에 도달하면 지나가게 내버려두라는 뜻입니다.

승애는 그리고 세인트앤병원 완화의료실에 입원했습니다. 완화의료는 임종을 앞두고 환자가

최대한 편안하게 지낼 수 있도록 설계되었습니다. 세인트앤 병원의 간호사와 의사들은 성애를

최대한 돕기 위해 노력하는 모습에 천사 같은 존재였습니다.

미국에 있는 승애의 여동생과 형제들은 배우자와 함께 들어왔습니다.

승애에게, 오랜 세월 사랑했던 사람에게, 작별을 고하러 왔다는 사실이 마음이 너무 아팠지만

함께할 수 있어서, 모두를 보게 되어 매우 감동적이었습니다.

불과 몇 주 전인 3월 8일, 승애는평화롭게 세상을 떠날 수 있도록 댄버리 시니어 리빙의

호스피스에 입소했습니다. 그리고 3월 19일, 승애는 세상을 떠났습니다.

저는 그녀의 여정이 매일 축복처럼다가왔습니다. 호스피스에서의 그녀의 마지막 12일은 우리

삶에서 가장 가까웠습니다. 제 침대는 그녀의 병상 옆에배치되어있었고, 우리는 하루 24시간

함께 있었습니다. 저는 그녀가 죽음을 준비하면서 겪고 있는 신체적, 정서적 고통과 슬픔에

대처할 수 있도록 의사들이 처방한 편안한 치료약을 투여했습니다. 저는 그녀에게

"사랑해"라고 말한 적이 있는지 물었더니, 그녀는 "네, 천번 만번이나요"라고 말했고, 그 말은

사실이었습니다.
